Beach smoking?

I recently had a nice vacation on the Rhode Island shore. Has anyone noticed more stringent rules on smoking on the beach?

My first day there at a state beach, the usual announcements were made several times -- rules of safety, pick up trash, and of course, no smoking. I was kind of shocked. Smoking is allowed in the parking lot, but you might as well be standing on a frying pan out there.

Is having a relaxing smoke in your beach chair a thing of the past?

I was in Florida last weekend, and smoked a many cigars on the beach. Not being able to smoke at the beach? when will it stop!

The anti smoking campaign here in Canada is huge but not smoking on a beach I have nver heard of. We have many, many restrictions but if it is a public place it is usually OK. That, of course may not stop people from berating the cigar you are smoking or the habit.

Smoking on the beach is relaxing while surf casting or walking (I never lay or sit around), however, frequently there is a sea breeze in this area which screws up the burn and makes smoking on the shore not worth while.

Some beaches in NJ are starting to implement no smoking as well.

My wife and I recently rented a place across from the beach in Florida, near Daytona, and spent several evenings enjoying cigars while walking on the beach. If it was wrong no one told us. My wife was at a convention in Texas and enjoyed cigars on the beach there without problems. She also goes to South Carolina to visit a friend regularly and enjoys smoking on the beach. We have a local beach and it has been a favourite place of ours to smoke for a few years now. We pay a huge price for our little vice!

I recently read that California and Washington State both made it illegal to smoke in public parks and on city/state owned golf courses.

Here, they recently made it illegal to smoke within 50 feet of a restaurant. When they made smoking inside a restaurant illegal the local restaurants opened outside seating. Seems the anti smoking crowd did not like that.

Lets face it, they will take and take until we stand up as a group and say "Enough is enough"

I have brought smokes to the beach before, but have always been hesitant to light them up because the beach is always so crowded!

I think we need one of our Doctor members to start a national research program to see if cigar smoking helps prevent swine flu. Issue the volunteers some kind of ID card, or something.
