cedar sleeves

I was smoking a 5 Vegas Series A, which is wrapped in a cedar sleeve, that had about two years of age. Every few puffs I was tasting what was definately a hint of cedar. Each time I'm like, "wow, that's nice". So then I thought, "I'd like for some of my other smokes to have that". I'm thinking I'll save these wraps from the Vegas and place em on some different sticks, let em rest, and see what works. Anyone ever done this?

Re: cedar sleeves

I save the wraps and use them to line my tray and seprate rows of gars in my humis. But that's really great I'm going to have to take a few and wrap them. I would if the sme would be true for cedar lined tubes. I'll have a buch of empty helix tubes soon all are lined. Might stuff something else in them for aging.

ive never don that myself.

...mainly because if the blender wanted them wrapped in cedar they woulda wrapped them in cedar. not all cigars are blended to have a strong cedar note.

Yes, I do it. I do especially when I have a harsh or green cigar that I want to nap for a year in my humi and want it to mellow into something nicer on the palate. Good results doing this, and never a bad result.

I see we have a conformist on our boards. j/k
Lots of people like to experiment with cigars. Hang around a couple of days and you'll see that. I typically don't do much experimenting. This would actually be my first.
Anyhow, if distilleries made their vodka taste like tomato juice, or orange juice, or red bull we wouldn't have to make cocktails. Where's the fun in that?

Re: cedar sleeves

I have never tried to wrap my other cigars in cedar sleeves, but I think I will give it a shot and see how it works out!

I tried that but found them to be a little thin and they curl up. So I started using the backers from fivers and separators used to separate the rows that come from some boxes. I find them to be a little thicker and more rigid.

Re: cedar sleeves

I employ a slightly less labor intensive approach. I place them in a cedar lined, humidity controlled box, rendering the same effect.

They flatten out eventually when I use them horizontally (layered).

I too use the fiver backs when I get them.

Would you happen to call that "cedar lined, humidity control box" a humidor? Surely cigar manufacturers assume most people buying their product have a humidor. So for them to wrap their cigars with a cedar sleeve, there must be some positive effect. I figure physical contact around the entire cigar wrapper would give it a more distinct cedar flavor in a shorter amount of time.

I really see the wrapping of cigars in cedar sleeves from two, simple perspectives.

1) Marketing. A sleeved cigar simply looks pretty and gives the illusion of being something more special than it usually is. We are intended to think that the maker cared so much about this cigar that he went to the herculean task of wrapping it in a wooden prophylaxis.

2) Moisture control.

I am more or less ambivalent about cedar flavor in my smokes. Don't get me wrong, my humidors are all lined in cedar, which seems to me to be above average in terms of odiferousness and therefore does impart it's aroma to the cigars. If it's there, it's fine. If it's not... eh.

In my experience, most of the sleeves I've removed before placing the cigar into my humidor have been nearly devoid of aroma. The sections are cut so thin that they lose their oils very quickly. Unless the sleeve is cut and immediately placed around the cigar, there is very little, if any aroma imparted to the tobacco. Sleeves have to be soaked in order to be shaped. This soaking also removes essential oils.

The best use I've found for sleeves it to break them into strips and use them to light my cigar. I also use them to maintain humidity of other types of tobacco. I mist them with DW and place them in the container.
