Mold

I've read a few threads where some of you fellas mentioned mold on your humi sticks . Never had that problem and I don't want to . How do you prevent that from happening ? I read where one guy put drinking straws under his cigars so they don't lay flat on the wood . Is that necessary ?

Re: Mold

I have never heard about the drinking straw idea, but if it is a workable prevention method, I will give it a shot. I'm curious to see what others have to say.

Re: Mold

You wont ever get mold if you keep your RH under 70%, and at a right temperature! Were is no such a thing as preventing mold, if you running over 72-4% it will start growing slowly in a while, not in 1 day!

Re: Mold

Dont let the relative humidity get away from you, and you will be okay.

Re: Mold

Use beads, that's the closest you can get to prevention.

Re: Mold

Beads are the way to go for a smaller humi. For a larger get a Hydra or something similar.

Re: Mold

Never had a problem, but as it's been said. I keep my humi @64-66%. But nobody mentioned, only use distilled water. I knew a couple of guys that ran out of distilled and thought they could get away with bottled spring water... NO NO NO. Only, I repeat ONLY use distilled.

Re: Mold

Also, keeping the area around the humi clean is a big factor. Mold is a spore and can be transmitted by hands, air and water. Be sure youre hands are clean and youre not opening the humi in a dank basement. Also, be sure you have a good look around your B&M. Look at their humidifier(s) and at all the sticks. If you see anything suspicious, dont put cigars from there in your humi. It's ok to smoke them, just dont store them.

It occurs more often when your RH is hovering around 80. For me, keeping my RH and temp at around 62-65% is best.

Google Heartfelt beads.

They come specifically designed for specific humidity. 60%, 65%, 70%. Most prefer 65%. What you do is wet them and they release humidity to that designated %. If the humidity is too low it releases moisture, if its too high it absorbs moisture.

Really is the best solution out there. I need to get some but I'm broke at the moment.

Do they come in a container or do I have to buy something to put them in ?

Re: Mold

You can put the beads in any type of container that will be open to the air. Lots of guys use pantyhose, or a dish. Both heartfelt and cigarmony sell fancy containers if your budget permits. I have had mold in the past (the Rh in my house is as high as 80), but haven't had them after I switched from gel to 65% beads. Also make sure your humidor is not catching any direct sunlight. Hope this helps
