Definitive Flavors of Specific Tobaccos
Ok guys, as a noob here, I've been wondering about (as the title states) definitive flavors of specific tobaccos. For instance, if you had to tell someone what Corojo tastes like, what would you say? Cameroon? What about specific origins? Honduras for example, what would be a broad term to describe the flavor of a Honduran cigar over a, say for example, Mexican cigar?
I just thought this might help out some other noobs like me. Thanks guys! |

Re: Definitive Flavors of Specific Tobaccos
With tastes being so subjective I can tell you now that you will probably get many different answers to this. Here is my opinion on some of the major ones.
COUNTRY: Nic: Peppery spice and leather Dom: Sweet spice, floral Hon: Earthy and not usually a lot of spice Cuba: Strong earth and spices which range from peppery to sweet (often within the same cigar) WRAPPER: Corojo: Spicy, earthy Cameroon: Sweet spice, floral Connecticut Shade: Mild leather and earth These are just some of my thoughts. Of course it varies wildly by the cigar because of blending, the region the tobacco was grown in, etc.

Re: Definitive Flavors of Specific Tobaccos
You know its funny about this topic. I have seen a few videos on the net, where the "experts" are discussing cigars, and they taste test a few, without knowing anything about the cigar. Its a blind test.
And nine out of ten times, it seem they cant guess the type of tobacco or the origins of the tobaccos. This surprised me. I have seen wine user after wine user, able to identify wines blindly and very consistantly. Does this tell me, that a lot of cigar smokers, are prejudging their smokes because of brand and price and looks as oppossed to independent thinking? Not trying to start a flame, just wondering about this. Much regards Jerry |

Re: Definitive Flavors of Specific Tobaccos
Thanks fellahs! And Jerry, I'm going to have to agree about preconceived notions as per pre-purchase influence. Sometimes I will buy a cigar because of what I've heard about it, and sometimes a friend and I will pick out different flavors than each other. I'm not so sure, but I'd tend to think that cigars may have a little more inconsistency in flavor profiles than wines, since they're made 1 by 1 using a blend of different leaves from different plants and possibly different vintagees, rather than having the ability to be mass-volume produced like a wine.
That's just a guess, though. I really know nothing about wine, that's more my dad's domain haha. In either event, thanks for the info Poppa. Next, if you had to give a noob a name of a cigar that is exemplary of its origin, what would it be? I'm just trying to clarify my palate so I can discern exactly WHAT it is I'm smoking instead of "Ooo! This tastes GOOD!" haha! Thanks again guys! Isaac! |

Re: Definitive Flavors of Specific Tobaccos
As a fellow newbie I would like to fully appreciate the different tobacco tastes as well. I recently put a thread about developing my palate and got a lot of great info from new smokers to veterans. I can't put it up any html's yet but it can be easily viewed on my page. I hope it can help you as well.

Sweet deal guys. Hey Rich, even though you can't paste links, you can still copy and paste a URL... I think? IDK, but hey, mind sharing that when you get a chance? I couldn't find it on your page, although I might not have been looking in the right area.

Also, can someone define what 'earthy' tastes like? Does it taste like you scooped up some topsoil and stuck it between your gum and cheek? Hahaha, I think Skoal should make a new flavor... Earth-Bandits.
