This weekends project. A New Humidor
Well, I came across a nice china cabinet on Craigs list and decided to see about making a humidor. This one was just want I was hoping for. Made of 100% red oak, with tongue and grove joints.
I was going to pull the shelving out of it and replace it with 100% Spanish cedar shelving but it was built in such a way that I could not remove the pieces with out cutting them so I decided to use them. Lined with 1/4" Spanish cedar, and the top shelve was one I built for it that is all Spanish cedar. Made only minor modifications to the doors and tested it by laying it on it's back and dropping one of the doors closed. It does not slam, it does just like my little desk humidor. Hope you enjoy the pictures. It is 8 cubic feet total. Cost, $175 for the china cabinet, 120$ for the Spanish cedar, + other small parts and pieces. Came out to about 300$ for the unit. |

Re: This weekends project. A New Humidor
Sweet. Good job. What did you do to the doors to ensure a sealed fit?

Re: This weekends project. A New Humidor
I have the Electronic humidification system on order, should have it on Thursday. I ordered the one that does 8 cubic feet and also added on the extra fans to circulate the air in the unit.
As to what I did to the doors, not a lot. The doors were inset into the unit and had a good seal as it was. The issue was with the glass. It was just set in the opening and held in place by some wood that was held in place by some brads. I removed them and filled in the area around the glass with a clear silicon sealant then replaced the wood holder and put in new brads. I was waiting for everything to dry, the silicon and some glue used to hold shelve slats. After I am done cleaning tonight and moving it to it's new home, Ill start the process of seasoning it. Hope to have it ready to go by Friday. Then I can load it up with the cigars in my smaller 500 cigar humidor and the ones in my coolidor. should be well stocked and ill snap a photo when it is up, running, and loaded. ![]() |

Holy Cannoli - That is beautiful! (& functional)
I wanted to do a project like that a few years ago, but I never found the right piece of furniture & ended up losing interest. Now that I bought a bigger house this year & will be refinishing my walk-out basement over the Winter I think I'm going to have to start searching for the right piece to put down there to show off my collection. |
