This is a discussion on "Maduro", when it's really "Oscuro"? within the General Cigar Discussion forums, part of the The Cigar Lounges at Puff category; If you ferment an Oscuro leaf longer does it become a Mascuro? Are there any on the market?...

If the factory has a need for the wrapper it can be done, but in my opinion a natural oscuro wrappers loooks nice, it also depends on what you like.

Re: "Maduro", when it's really "Oscuro"?
I, too, like to use links. what i say isnt opinion feel free to check it out for yourself.
Maduro and Oscuro-The Basics by David P. Diaz, with José Blanco from the link: There are many misconceptions about the differences between maduro and oscuro wrappers. Many people think the distinction is simply the color differences between the leaves..... Oscuro is a Spanish word that means “blackish” or “dark.” Oscuro wrapper leaves are typically taken from the top priming, or uppermost part of the tobacco plant. These leaves are called the corona (“crown”) or medio tiempo (literally “half time,” meaning they’ve been left on the plant 50% longer). Since these leaves have been exposed to a maximum amount of sunlight, they begin to cure on the plant. You end up with a darker, thicker, richer and more flavorful leaf. Oscuro leaves then go through a normal fermentation process, with a shorter fermentation time and at lower temperatures than for maduro. After fermentation and before manufacturing cigars, oscuro leaves are aged. Some companies will age the leaves in barrels, crates, or bales. During this aging period the leaves will get even darker, sometimes you will see leaves that are totally black, causing many people to mistakenly think they are maduro. Nevertheless, it is not possible to distinguish between maduro and oscuro leaves simply on the basis of color. Instead, it is the different processes that determine whether the tobacco leaves are maduro or oscuro.

Dyeing cigars to make them look oscuro...I've heard of this, and I'm kinda perturbed by it.
Does anyone know which cigars/brands, for sure, do this? I've heard rumors about the Padilla Obsidians, but I guess I'll find that out when the mail gets here (cbid had a great deal). |

Re: "Maduro", when it's really "Oscuro"?
I went to my local BM and they were handing out the new Davidoff and Camacho Maduro Candella barberpole. I really found the maduro to be ash to burn very nicely, however, when I was puffing on the candela ash it was fire proof. I spent half the time with my zippo lighter on the cigar smoking, it tasted a little odd but was good. I asked the rep how they made it and they said that a rogue roller tried to make one one time and they followed her blend. He told me that they are going to try and float a 60 rg 4 inch cigar for the US market. Lets hope this happens.

Close. I know for a fact that Fuente does not dye at all. However RP definitely does. Some of Fuentes Sun Grown wrappers come from Oliva stock grown at Fuente's farm. I am getting ready to take another trip to the farm, and will take photos for you. I do have pix of the factory from last year at my profile though if you want to see the production.

Guys, had forgot that I helped a bit the Doc with this article, think it's very clear the difference between the two, but to be honest it comes down to what you like, don't get in to a lot of details some times your gut feeling is the best way to go, hope all of you have a great weekend and find some great cigars to smoke.

Re: "Maduro", when it's really "Oscuro"?
A Oscuro & Madro Dos Capa would be somethign worth trying, not sure about a candela in the mix... maybe if it was like the burbury... What about a oscuro filler and a conn shade grown maduro wrapper, now that sounds like something I could smoke!

Re: "Maduro", when it's really "Oscuro"?
I had never heard of Fuente using dye. It very well could have been a buildup of tar....that stuff is actually tougher to get off than the dye
