Lighting cigar with Blue laser..

Hi,

I just came across this instructable (can't post the link but check out "Cheapy Lighter Laser burner" on instructables site) and it got me thinking.

I had heard of lasers that make fire before, but his got me thinking. Now mind you the build cost is $75 for that one, but if this worked, wouldnt buying a blue laser and batteries over time be cheaper in the long run than buying butane and replacing butane lighters?

Your comments please?
If anyone too can comment on the heat point needed to light a cigar properly and these two methods, that would be great.

Well you would probaly get a cleaner taste without the butane, however I'm sure it takes longer to light with a lazer than I'm willing to spend doing it. Not to mention it'd probaly be hard to get an even burn and idk if I trust blue lasers nit to have radiation in levels I don't want.

I feel the same way about the project, as a trial, because of the cost. Still it would be interesting to hear from someone who has done it.

Regarding the safety issue. I heard blue lasers can cause blindness at that intensity, and it would be aiming towards the eyes if lighting, in some instances..

Re: Lighting cigar with Blue laser..

1 can of Vector is about $6 for the big can,,,a Ronson is $3,,total cost for one year of lighting cigars is $9. I think I will stay with the butane lighter.

I'm sure it's not cheaper, but it sounds like it would be fun!

I totally agree. Butane is not expensive, therefore I will continue doing what I'm doing.

Re: Lighting cigar with Blue laser..

There are a bunch of those videos on youtube, lmaking them to light cigars, and all other kinds of thing, basically just to start fires. But I have read that these are all BS and you will not be able to build your own watching the video. I will save my money.

Re: Lighting cigar with Blue laser..

Heh, with the way that I wave the lighter around while torching the foot of the cigar, I'd have burns all over my hands, clothes, nearby children and animals... Would be pretty sweet, though (the lighter, not the burning hands, clothes, etc).

Re: Lighting cigar with Blue laser..

You are not going to light a laser with a 488nm line [blue] laser. They don't put out enough power. We work with 405nm, 488nm [blue] and 635nm [red] lasers and it just isn't going to happen.

Yea I agree, but maybe a nice big meaty green laser would do the job

Re: Lighting cigar with Blue laser..

Or a tuneable UV laser...we used to burn through business cards with one of those...but it was a big honkin water-cooled job and that would be hard to fit in your pocket!
