Heading to college and I have a few questions
I'm heading to the city Mom, becoming a real man! haha
I am heading out to Suffolk University on Beacon Hill in Boston and I'm really excited! I bought a box of these.............. ![]() to give out to everyone on my floor to break the ice and make some friends. Is there anything that I should know in general about the college experience? Anything about Boston? And is there any advice about cigar storage and safety that I should know? On another note I purchased the last of some Kristoff Maduros and I got the box with my purchase. It comes with loose tobacco in it, should I add some of the loose tobacco to my humidor? Is there any thing I can use it for? I would hate to throw it away, it smells very good. On another nother note Is there any certain way to organize and store cigars in a humidor? Like storing Maduros in the bottom, storing certain cigars together, or something along that line? BTW I have a 100ct humidor, with a tray and a basin in the bottom. Thanks for any advice or help, I really appreciate it, and I'm sorry if there are too many questions!

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
Sure is different than the smokes we handed out to make friends when I was in school. Of course, that was in the late 60's and, well ..... nevermind.

![]() I wish i lived down the hall. There's no such thing as too many questions! I'm in my senior year of college and I could write a book on what you should know about it. My number one tip is to learn to eat healthy on your own. Don't get a school meal plan to eat their cafeteria food every meal (my college has this and the food they offer wouldn't be considered 'unhealthy' but it will definitely make you gain a lot of weight). What else..save some easy classes and electives for your later years so you don't get overloaded. Don't take stupid pe classes for 1 credit hour. Get into an apartment asap. Join a fraternity (contrary to popular thought, they arent all about getting drunk and really help you grow as a person), join a lot of clubs/honor societies - you gain great leadership skills and learn how to deal with people, once you piss off one sorority girl, you've pissed off her whole sorority (date independants). The list goes on... I got some loose tobacco from a purchase from New Orleans Cigar factory and indeed it did smell good, but if not kept in a humi it'll get crispy and make a mess. There really isn't any use for it (that i can think of). As far as storage and safety, just keep your humi in good condition and you're good to go! It doesn't matter what type of cigar goes where in your humi (unless they're infused or flavored-in that case they need to be kept in a completely different container). I organize mine by brand, wrapper type, or size. oh yeah, remember: If you graduate in less than 7 years, it's your own damn fault ![]() Good luck!

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
John Gave some good advice. I was an RA for a bit and say the destruction of bright individuals. MY personal recommendations.
Work first play second. A lot of people get caught up in the party scene, i'm not saying not to party, but makes sure that 25 page paper is that's due Friday morning is done before going out. It's ok to say no. Friends want to go out on a Tuesday, but you got a test. just use your head Time Management will save your life, break up big project into small chucks, I would advise against the all nighters, but some just operate that way. I would agree with John to an extent with fraternities, some are good some not so. They can be $$$ for some. But hands down I would get involved in something Club sport, service org, frat etc. Seek out on campus resources, there are a lot of places for help on campus, whether it is the writing center or just someone to talk to. Don't be afraid to speak up in class, first year most seem a little timid, speak up in discussion, its makes the class experience much better. Most importantly, Relax and enjoy the ride. Your gonna have good days and bad, hard and easy, awesome professors and crappy ones, its all apart of the experience. Frankly I'm so jealous I miss college so much...But good Luck! Keep us posted through the year....

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
Only party on the weekends. If you have at least 4 years of college you will get enough late nights of boozing it up on the weekends. Doesn't mean you can't have a late night, stay up and smoke, stay up video games and pizza. But leave the drinking for the weekends.
Eat well is good advice, watch that freshman 15, it goes for guys too. Sit in the front of class. I always told people 2 things about this. 1) The class is only as big as the number of people sitting in front of you. If there are 20 people in front of you, the class feels like there are 21 people in it. If there are 300 people in front of you, well you get the idea. 2) The people in the front are usually more likely to know what the hell the prof is talking about then the people in the back. That helps out a lot if you have no idea what's going on in class. Go to office hours. A lot of professors will tutor you one on one in office hours, and if you struggle in a class they are more likely to bump your grade if they know who you are. |

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
My advice is get drunk whenever you want. Party whenever you want. BUT GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION. You will do well if that is the case! I drank and smoked (not cigars) all 4 years and I went to class and did well. I am not a genius, just figured out if you take notes, pay attention and study for tests, you can do whatever, whenever you want.
Enjoy it! Its the best years of your life! |

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
Im on the 10 year plan
![]() Dorm life was never for me, to many rules. However, I suppose if a frat is your thing (not mine) then do it. Definitely get involved, in class and out of class, if the professor knows who you are, your on top of your game. Dont be shy, people are really easy to meet in college, cause most people are new to the area and dont have many friends. Get a fake id lol Have fun, but not to much fun, like someone else said, make sure you get all your work done before you go out and party, there will be plenty of time for that, but if you flunk out of school, your pretty much screwed. Good Luck and keep us posted!

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
Man, that's not what I remember being passed around at school!! Pretty much what everybody has said already is great advice. Participate, participate, participate... don't be a loner. Remember that advice above about saying 'no' and knowing when to say 'no.' College is not about partying. The partying just comes with the territory.
Also, depending on what your interests/major are, when you graduate go immediately to grad school. I had more fun and made more (serious) friends in grad school that I keep in touch with than I ever did as an undergrad. In fact, I visited my grad school in March and will return in November. It is only a coincidence that I am visiting USF in Tampa while the Cigar Heritage Festival is taking place!! See, fringe benefits! ![]() |

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
Let's see. I partied all of the time, drank too much, smoked too much, skipped classes, had to cram for every test so as not to fail, had 3 broken relationships (wonder why), went to almost all home football basketball and hockey game. I quit after 5 years and joined the Navy. So 5 years, no degree, and still paying my loans. I would probably not do any of these things if I were you.

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
Man O' man are you going to have a great time!! I went to Central Florida (passed up a full ride at South Florida for a 75% scholarship
![]() ![]() ![]() )Anyways, I agree with the aforementioned advice!! Make sure you study, go to class and be responsible. Most of all, do NOT drive drunk or get in a car with drunk people (this can sometimes be hard to do but get a cab if need be). Also, make sure to enjoy all the beautiful girls....mmmmmm nice.... Yeah....few notches on my belt from then (just don't tell my better half HAHA!). It is an awesome experience and like everyone else, I wish I could go back. If you were sheltered, try not to go nuts and stay out every night. I cannot count how many people that had tabs kept on them so tight that the first thing they did when they got to college was to go batshit crazy!! That definitely hurt their grades and progress. |

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
The beat advise I can give you is, don't wait until your junior year before getting serious about your studies. It's real hard to get your gpa up in the later half of college

Re: Heading to college and I have a few questions
Best advice is to find the balance between having fun and making the grade. You have the rest of your life to party and make money. Don't do anything stupid that you would regret.
