Re: Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?
Some people look for a reason to take something out on the next person in line. I say if you were polite enough to go down wind and out of the way of individuals that do not par-take in the finer things in life then you did your part.
Some people would gripe about anything. Put them next to their boss that smokes and see what they say then---"Nothing!" |

Re: Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?
This reminds me of about 2 years ago when I started smoking. I was at a bar and after the last call I headed outside to light up my cigar before I made the intoxicated walk home. While trying to light the cigar, a woman about my age (22 or so at the time) proceeded to walk back across the street just to tell me that the cigar wasn't doing anything for me. All I said was, 'Oh Well.' And then lit up and enjoyed my drunken walk home!
But I agree with what you said, It is rediculous(spelling?) when cigarette smokers proceed to claim that your smoke stinks and is bothersome while theirs is just the same! |

Howdy Rich,
I am sorry to hear about the buzzkill........ and I feel your pain. I have read a lot of threads that address this issue in one way or another. It usually simply saddens me. Today though was different. Your thread motivated me to start a group project. Here is a link to it; Dealing with people who complain if a gar is smoked Best wishes, Dafiddla |

Re: Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?
I would have walked UPWIND of them, and then asked, "Is that better now, maam?" (actually, I would have been smoking a cigar instead, since I hate the smell of cigarettes)
![]() >> I'm a cigarette smoker, and there was this one time after a meal, I stepped outside the resteraunt for a smoke. I went out of my way to go downwind and was about 40 feet away from the entrance. This group of 8 people walk out and decide to have an after dinner conversation right next to me, I was still downwind mind you.... Then one of the ladies started coughing "intentionally" like a record, giving me the evil eye each time. And she finally snapped at me and said, "Do you mind!!!", I replied "Not at all" and offered her a cigarette, and continued smoking as they walked away not wanting to mess with me....LOL!!! >> |

Re: Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?
There are some interesting stories in here. lol
Ok, some time ago I had a lady stand next to me and cough. I look at her and said "Sounds like you are catching a cold, you should take something for that cough." She replied that it was the smoke that was bothering her and causing her to cough. To which I replied "Then you should move further away from me instead of standing so close." She got all upset and walked away. |

I usually just say "Remind you of your day job?" while giving a sympathetic look.

Re: Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?
I feel you dude. It's a perception thing, though. We perceive our cigar enjoyment as something pleasurable and relaxing, while they perceive it as something intrusive and annoying. You could do one of three things that I do: understand that the majority of these people do not get the same pleasure out of tobacco that I do and politely put out my stick (if it isn't something more expensive, that is), ASK the next time before you light your stogie if anyone has any objection (and some people might actually see this as a kind gesture and say no, go ahead), or do what you say and stay at home and be a lonely smoker. Again though, it's that perception thing. There is no right way or wrong way to deal with this, just do what you're comfortable with, without being inconsiderate of others' feelings!

Re: Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?
There's no doubt that tobacco is being demonized in this country by certain groups and because the media doesn't really investigate much but rather just parrots what these people say it understandable that a lot of people are misinformed. Sounds like a chance to educate some people on the finer things in life and remind them that doing something that's bad for you once in a while can be fun. I bet they all engage in some behavior that someone, somewhere frowns upon. Heck, you might even gain a smoking buddy.

I go to theat area of the Bronx often. That is a big cigar smokeing area. Especially as you head towards country club, morris park avenue. Heavy italian who have been smokeing cigars since the "old country" I believe there are even a few good cigar stores in the area. But go to country club area on a sunday, when everyone is grilling and you will catch the scent of many of cigar. If I am in the area, I like to go into Maritime College and sit on a bench by the bay, and watch the ships and the bridges. Its always so peacefull there, and I kind of feel at home with Fort Scuyler at my back, and the maritime students in their uniforms. Perhaps one day we can meet up there. Much regards Jerry |

Re: Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?
I do not particularly care for cigarette smoke so I always try to keep my cigar smoke away from people that do not applicate cigars. I also only smoke in cigar friendly places to avoid such conflicts.
The most times I get negative comments is in a casino but it is usually from someone that sits down next to me while I am smoking. I just ignore them. |

Re: Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?
Today is the first day since I started smoking cigars, out in public other then a cigar bar.
I was out in the city and walking down 42nd st and going towards grand central and I noticed lots of dirty stares and even heard one guy complained about the smell of my cigar smoke and say not directly to me but to his wife how can people smoke those cigars they smell horrible. I tried my best not blow the smoke in anyone face, but at that point I just did not care anymore, people were giving me dirty looks for just holding the cigar in my hand. |
