Why do people feel it necessary to give me crap?

About two weeks ago my family and I went to a friends house for a bbq. It was a nice sunny day outside so I decided to light a cigar. About 2 minutes passed when the bad looks started to show. Then the comments started. "That stinks", "why can't you wait until you get home", etc, etc, etc. Mind you that I purposely sat downwind so nobody would be bothered. Now I know nobody could tell I was smoking until the caught the visual.I want to add that these comments were sort of in fun but I still felt a little singled out. THESE ARE MY GOOD FRIENDS! Anyway my family and I stopped by a friends house for a couple of hours not far from my home late this afternoon. Yes, my wife dragged me away from being on Puff.com but again, only for a couple of hours. Needless to say, it started all over again. Why do people give me crap when I make sure my smoking doesn't interfere with their fun? I know they think cigars are worse than cigarettes because they (cigarette smokers) don't get the crap I do. I let it all roll off of me but I don't have the good time that I should be having. At least until I finish my smoke. I've already been invited to Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx in two weeks but I think this time I'll pass and just smoke all I want in my backyard deck.

Guess it's all part of the "hype" that people have over cigars. Before you even light it people already get their bowels in an uproar and start waving their hands or holding their noses,,,,,the very same people who are smokers I might add. After awhile you will become one of the "old timers" like me who light up anyway and enjoy it. I will try to accomodate others around me but if other people are smoking cigarettes I don't have a problem lighting up my cigar.

Unfortunately when we as cigar smokers, venture outside of our "safe" environment, be that smoking lounge, back porch, outside the 12 mile limit, or whatever, we open ourselves to public scorn from the people who share our oxygen, right or wrong, friend or no. Everyone's got an opinion, and the most dis-agreeable ones are usually also the most vociferous. Cigars are supposed to be enjoyable and relaxing. If the venue is interfering with either of those, then for my own peace of mind, I either fore-go the smoke or the camaraderie. Good luck with this one, it's a toughie.

Sounds like you ran into a little self-righteous indignation there.

Some folks are so insecure they just feel compelled to show the world how morally superior they are, when in fact, they are just jumping on the popular bandwagon without an original thought of their own.

Take some RP seconds in a travel-dor and try to get some of the other smokers to join in with you? Or something else that's good but fairly inexpensive. Really stink up the joint. Or tell them they're mistaken, because you didn't even bring the stinky ones. Tell them you are only smoking a cigar so that you can fart without getting caught. Ask them why they don't want poor children to have health insurance. There are many ways to approach this, one of which is, yes, staying home on your deck.

Here's my story...

I am not bragging, but I am a very nice guy that will go out his way to help out a total stranger, but disrespect me, different story...

Not that anyone here would agree with me, but when you were at your buddies house, and you, out of respect for your pals choose a place to sit down wind, and the comments started, I would have stood up, and politely said "It's obvious you can't enjoy some of the finer things in life" give a quick thanks to the host for the invite, as I intentionally ashed on their sidewalk on the way out...

That's just me...

I'm a cigarette smoker, and there was this one time after a meal, I stepped outside the resteraunt for a smoke. I went out of my way to go downwind and was about 40 feet away from the entrance. This group of 8 people walk out and decide to have an after dinner conversation right next to me, I was still downwind mind you.... Then one of the ladies started coughing "intentionally" like a record, giving me the evil eye each time. And she finally snapped at me and said, "Do you mind!!!", I replied "Not at all" and offered her a cigarette, and continued smoking as they walked away not wanting to mess with me....LOL!!!

Had she have been polite, I would have said no problem and walked somewhere else, disrespect me, you can be asking for it...
