Are they worth it??? It's up to the individual, The way I see it is, try em' on occasion...

Cigar smoking is a fun, relaxing, and exciting (in the aspect of taking a gamble to try something new, different, and perhaps expensive...

I can say for myself, I have had some Super Premiums that I thought were total crap as I scratched my head in wonder thinking "How exactly is this cigar selling for $20 + dollars?!?" And I have had some that tasted Super Premium as their price reflected...

On the contrary, I also buy some bundles that are dirt cheap, and in my mind have a $20+ dollar quality of taste and construction to it...

Funny thing is though... for me and my taste preference, I have yet to find a cigar that can beat an Oliva V...

I have a range of all costs in my humidors and I have gotten a lot of pleasure from a cigar that cost $1.25 because it has a taste I enjoy, I had a great drink with it and I had some great ruminations of the day. Conversely, I have had a $25 cigar and had a lousy day with a crappy drink and the wife and I had just had an argument so you can imagine how that cigar smoked. It's a state of mind that you share with a cigar and if your mind is relaxed and receptive a $4 cigar can taste like a super premium one.
I have to agree. Your state of mind will make a huge difference.

Re: Super Premium Stogies, worth it?

For me, anything over $10 is super-premium. I've only smoked a handful of anything more expensive than that and they were very good. But not so much that I'd pay $20 for one. Who knows, maybe in the future. Right now it's just not in the budget.

It depends on if that B&M smoke comes with a lounge and big screen TV that you can enjoy when the days are too hot/cold/windy/raining. If it does I will support that B&M and eat the difference occasionally. I do the majority of my shopping on C-bid and via the internet but there is just something about walking through the Humi oohing and ahhing over whats new and what looks good today and picking out a hand full of odds and ends that you may or may not buy a box or fiver of on line. Of course just my $.02

Re: Super Premium Stogies, worth it?

To each his own. While 95% of the cigars I smoke (and enjoy tremendously) are in the $4-$8 range, I've smoked a few cigars in the $20-$25 range, and quite a few in the $13-$16 range, and I have to ask myself, "Is the $20.00 cigar 4-times better than the $5.00 stick? Is the $15.00 one 3-times as good? (and so on). The resounding answer is always "No". In that sense, they absolutely are not worth it.

Ultimately, smoke what you like - you don't have to justify it to anyone else. If you enjoy it, and can afford it, I guess it's worth it. I do it occasionally even though I know it's not really "worth it". Go figger.

Re: Super Premium Stogies, worth it?

I have paid 20 bucks but most of the time im in 10 to 15, like with opus, GOF, and such, but my everyday smokes are like short storys and TAT VI anglels, and there are more like 5 bucks and maybe some cheaper CC like Monte 5 and punch 12, these seem to be what i buy boxs of you know in the 100 to 150 box range.

Much regards Jerry
It used to be that cigars had a fixed list price that was discounted to the retailers so the retail price was fixed from MSRP and down. Taxes weren't an issue.

Now many prices are set by (cost + taxes) * markup. The BMs generally have high taxes that shoot their prices up. MSRP seems to be set based on this.

Some weeks ago I loaded up on Gurkhas from JR @$2.60 a stick (inc shipping) that had MSRPs of $8-$16 and they all smoke like what I consider a @$1,50 - $2.00 stick (not bad, just not worth the money). I use them as knockarounds.

Over the Labor Day weekend I gave 3 friends some sticks (bands removed) that I had just gotten for $1.25 and they thought that they were @$10-$12 cigars. I agree, exceptional.

The bottom line is that cigars are for our enjoyment and whatever price someone pays - if the stick delivers then it's a good cigar.

Good smoking,

Pete

So much experience and sage wisdom on this thread!

In the end, smoke what you like and like what you smoke!

Funny I should find this thread while still in the first inch of my absolute favorite NC... Anejo Shark!

I'm not boasting, but consider this... Anejo Shark IS my personal favorite non-cuban cigar. That means, I would step over five packs of most Opus, Padron, Tatuaje... ad infinitum, to get to just one Shark. I paid $14 for this particular stick and I have never smoked anything more expensive that was better. Now, I have paid more, which brings up my point.

I rarely pay sticker price for "super-premiums". With some, it's unavoidable, but I never fall for the "gougings" that some retailers put on premi's. Fact is, there is NOTHING so rare, nothing soooo special, as to out-pace it's original MSRP. The most expensive cigar in my inventory is a PAM 80, but I have other cigars, for which I paid a third, yet people regularly pay three times it's retail cost, which are [in my opinion] better.

In the end, the real acid test is, how that cigar tastes to me!

Re: Super Premium Stogies, worth it?

For the most part, no. I've enjoyed my padron 3000's and flor de oliva's WAY better then most of the platinum packs I've bought from Atlantic. Only thing that caught my attention was the don pepin sticks.
