When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

I was talking with Don, Herf n Turf, about the Sharks he was saving when the discussion came up about special smokes and when to smoke them.

To quote Calito Fuente "Cigars are meant to be smoked". Some cigars loose flavor if you age them and others take on flavors from the other sticks near them. I find that Tuesday is a special occasion to smoke a good stick. Or Monday afternoon. Unless Wednesday morning is open, but never say never to Thursday, unless I am asleep.

I like the expression, Smokem if you gottem. They can all be replaced. Or not. But think of this,,, There you are with a beautiful woman sitting next to you on the couch, she leans over and whispers in your ear that she wants to make wild passionate love to you. What do you do? Do you say "You are so beautiful that I want to wait for that special occasion to take you? I know some of you well. You'd jump her as fast as you could get your clothes off. Well, a fine cigar IS like a beautiful woman to me. They look wonderful and scream, "Come take me now". You could die tomorrow and in that case, tell your wife or POA that my address is in my profile and just box them up and send them to me. LOL

So one more time, I say "Smokem if you gottem" or not. The choice is yours.

Thanks for the call tonight Don. It was a good reminder. And so I smoked a Padron 1964 Maduro OR (original release) tonight. Only sixteen years old.

Re: When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

Great question Andy. I think a special smoke should be had on a special or sentimental occasion preferrably with someone who can appreciate a great smoke as well. for instance, when we did our mini herf, Sam smoked the Forbidden X and I got to try my first GOF, I wouldn't have been able to pick a better place or time to smoke that. I think you got as much enjoyment out of watching us smoke them sticks as we had actually smoking them. You made them more special than they would've been being smoked by our lonesome. To me it was a tremendous night.

Re: When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

I had my first Opus X on my birthday last year. My son bought it for me when he was visiting his girlfriend in Ohio. He was 19 at the time at I was tremendously appreciative. It was aged for about 8 months and it was delicious. He is now in the Air Force and will be coming home from basic training and tech school in mid October before he goes away for a year. I don't have anything really special right now but I will splurge on something at that time because to me it will be a very special occasion.

Re: When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

Many of us around here only have the money to smoke the really rare ones on rare occasions. I have one super premium in my humi now that I would never have been able to justify buying because of taking care of the family. It was given to me by a very good friend of mine. I may NEVER get the chance to replace that cigar. So I will try to find the perfect oppurtunity to smoke it. To me there are everyday cigars, once a week cigars, once a month cigars, and special occassion cigars.

Re: When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

A special occasion is a good time to smoke a special cigar. Obvious answers are obvious... lol i'm sorry i couldn't resist that one... to go along with what you guys were talking about, i usually save the special cigars for times when I have time to spend hanging out, listening to good music, having good conversation, with good friends. Other than that, I have 2 cigars in my humidor that are premiums (to me), as i can't afford to spend 20+ bucks on a stick that might last me 2 hours at best. Those two cigars are an Ashton Cabinet Series and a Fuente King B. I plan on smoking one at the end of this semester and the other when I graduate. I think I'll save the Fuente for graduation as I look at Fuentes as celebratory cigars, probably because I usually buy them singles, for special events.

Re: When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

Comparing cigars to having sex....Hmmm well, wouldn't it depend on which one lasts longer? Haha, I'm just messing.

Right now I'm only saving the 2 Padron '64 Anny Maduro cigars I have for my Anniversary with my new fiance (woohoo). On our anniversaries, I've smoked the Padron Anny a few times. It just seems like something I'd like to keep going, specially when she is out there smoking with me! Makes the cigars that much more enjoyable.

Re: When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

As long as I have the time and peace to enjoy it, I will smoke a premium. That being said, a premium in my meager collection is maybe a Rocky Patel I*Press or a Carlos Torana Exodus 1959. Nothing to pricey or rare. Still I think my original criteria would apply to any stick. Just having the time and peace to enjoy it. I mean who wants to waste a Padron 1926 while mowing the lawn? I would haoever tend to select a premium stick on special occassion, though at this point I may end up in bed shortly after with the spins

Re: When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

I agree with both you guys. A premium stick to me is something that *I* am fond of, and might not be everyone else's cup of tea or conception of 'premium'. God knows I've had a few, as you guys call them, 'dog-rockets' that have been labeled as premium. I honestly reserve my La Vieja Habanas for working on my car, which in itself is a special occasion because that means A: I woke up in time for sunlight and B: I'd have broken something new and important, and might be teaching the neighbors some new vocabulary!

Re: When is a good time to smoke a special cigar?

I see the impotice for this thread was my call to Andy last night. He's right. While he was here, we got to talking about my Anejo collection and "special occasions". I had told him that a mutual friend had suggested (while discussing hard-to-finds), "smoke nothing until you can replace it." Well, Andy "semi-agreed", but then "semi-rebuffed" with his "smokem' if ya gottem." I told Andy that special cigar occasions for me were typically not Christmas, NYE and such, but rather when I have the alone time to sit and truly appreciate the stick for itself.

And, that's exactly what I did, thanks to Andy. The night after he left, I dug deep in my magic box, into the deepest recess and unashamedly snatched out one of the sacred Anejo. It did NOT disappoint.

Holidays and such are great for premiums, but I reserve super-premiums for my special cigar occasions.

I will have some time again tonight. Something cuban? Mmmmm....

Thanks again, Andy.
