Ammonia Smell

I picked up a few house brand Nicaraguan lanceros from Famous a few weeks ago and thought I'd give one a try tonight. I took the cello off and held the cigar to my nose and it almost took my breath away, the ammonia smell was so strong. I quickly replaced the cello and put it back in my humidor. I've smelled this before but never this strong. Should I segregate these while they age? I don't want them to pass the smell to my other cigars. Or, if they smell that bad, is there no hope for them and should I just toss them?

Re: Ammonia Smell

I would just go ahead and smoke one of them and see what you have...If you hate it or it seems too new with a strong "ammonia" smell, then store them...I doubt that you should keep them separate unless they are infused or something...

I've had a few that had that aroma to them. They were fairly green out of the field I would think. Let them sit for a couple of months, much better.

this is a correct line of thought. the tobacco has not gone through all the proper aging before it is shipped to you. let it sit for a while and the ammonia smell will age out.
