humidor preferences?
I apologize. I know much of this has been covered, but I am still a little foggy on some of these issues. I am currently trying to get my first humidor stabilized so I can get it filled up.
#1 - I've seen threads where people ask cello on or off in the humi. The general consensus says off. Then you look in the thread where you post pics of your humis and it looks like more guys leave the cello on. What gives? #2 - I read all over in the forum that some smokes age well and some don't. How do you know which is which? Can a smoke actually get worse with age? #3 - Common sense tells me to keep a CI special $1 stick away from my Opus X, but what else do I want to prevent from marrying? Different countries? I don't have a clue. Help! Please enlighten me puff experts. Thank you. |

Cello on or off is personal preference maybe those that perfer it on post more pictures - I go with leave them as the manufacture made them. Sticks don't tend to get worse with age they may get muted but that takes decades if ever. The old addage is sh*t in sh*t out. You can't age a stick to being good. There is no telling if you will like a stick better with age. Some think it makes them less harsh, makes them more complex etc. But the best way to find out if you like aged stuff is to buy it and try it before you age your stock for 10 years. Aging is easy buy more then you smoke Mix you sticks as you feel they are best organized - sticks take a long time to marry (if ever) unless your taking flavoured sticks keep them far away from other sticks and me.

Re: humidor preferences?
Good advice K Baz...
Cellophane "breathes"...so it doesnt matter if you leave it on or take it off...it does protect your cigars from minor damage when they are moved though, and for that reason i leave them on if they come that way. Also I keep all my high dollar cigars well away from my $1 cigars...I mean, Do Kings and Queens sleep with the commoners...I think not... |

I take the cello off on any of the smokes stored outside of the box, leave them on in the box. No logical reason other then I do not like to mix cigars with wrappers with the naked ones since that can do some damage. #2 - I read all over in the forum that some smokes age well and some don't. How do you know which is which? Can a smoke actually get worse with age? That is the million dollar question. Most CC's do better with age. In general very strong full body NC's will develop with age but that is not always true. It really gets down to taste. #3 - Common sense tells me to keep a CI special $1 stick away from my Opus X, but what else do I want to prevent from marrying? Different countries? I don't have a clue. Help! If I had a flavored cigar I would keep it away from other cigars and my mouth, other then that I have not noticed any problems. |

Re: humidor preferences?
I prefer to leave them as they come from the manufacturer.
While I don't like the aesthetic look of cello sitting in the humidor, I agree that it can be useful to have them in the cello because if you move them around, take one out to carry with you for the day, etc. it helps to have that extra protection. |

Re: humidor preferences?
I agree on keeping your high dollar smokes separate from your everyday smokes. I have s separate humidor for them.

Re: humidor preferences?
All good suggestions. If you are worried about marrying keep the high dollar sticks away from the budget smokes. It does take a LONG time to marry flavors, but it depends on the tobacco. If you have only one humi use the thin sheets of cedar that line the bottom of some cigar boxes to separate the sticks. As far as aging goes, IMHO it does help some smokes quite a bit. Take the RP juniors for example. If you get them right off the truck they are harsh and nearly unsmokeable. Let them sit for 4 to 6 months and they are a tasty little treat.
