Newbie advice - Go bigger

Thought this may help any newbies like myself. Whatever you think you need, it won't be enough.

  • Last 1-2 years. Grab a stick at the local shop for special occasions.
  • In the last 2 weeks found puff.com.
  • Decided to build a small tupperdore to hold 20 or so sticks. Ordered the humidifier, bought the Tupperware.
  • Read more on puff.com
  • Changed my mind, decided to get a small humi (20-25 ct) so I can stock a few sticks in style. Bought one despite numerous posts to double what you think you need.
  • Go a great deal on 18 sticks from a fellow Canadian puff.com member. Thanks Jeff.
  • Humidor is almost seasoned but will be pretty much full from the get go.
Sigh, it is a slippery slope.

That's what happens when you don't heed the advise from us veteran Puffers whom have made the same mistakes as newbies! My advise is skip the 20 to 50 count humi's and go straight for the 200 to 400 count humi! That will keep you from having to buy another humi for at least 6 months! The slope is VERY, VERY slippery my fellow Puffers!

Yeah,, it grabs you fast. But it is a lot of fun. The wife has even caught me talking to the little fellows in the morning when I wake up.
First thing I do(after the walk down the hall, lol) is greet my humidors, say hello to the little fellows, and see how they are doing, checking the hygros, and giving a good long slow sniff into each humidor to make sure everybodys happy and healthy. Sort of like I did to my kids and do to my grandkids when they stay over.
After that I can go on with my day?
Enjoy Much regards Jerry

Re: Newbie advice - Go bigger

Yes, so true. It always kills me especially when noobs ask advice and get the age old wisdom of buying a large humi to start and shoot it down with, "Nah, I only have 1-2 a week" lol.

I started with a small 50 count glasstop humi. Right after that went to this:

500 Cigar Standing Humidor: Cheap Humidors Cigar Humidor Cigar Accessories CheapHumidors.com

and have been perfectly happy since. Had this one for like a year or more now and have not needed to go any bigger, just what I need.

Re: Newbie advice - Go bigger

Face it guys, tis Puff.com that causes this syndrom. At Xmas time, I was gifted a 150ct, but didnt like it, so I bought myself a 200ct I love. Some will recall that when I posted pics, I refered to it as "the last humidor I will every need". I was summarily laughed at.

Both humis are now full, as is my old 30ct box. Another 30ct is bloating and I'm making designs on my dry box.

All I ever wanted was to just have a few singles around to save having to go to the shop everytime I wanted a cigar. Gee, come to think of it, my goal's been met, eh?

Re: Newbie advice - Go bigger

I think the major problem and the reason the slope is so easy to fall down, is that these babies only get better with age, and we are constantly be threatened with higher taxes and new laws that might make their acquisition at least at a certain lower price harder to come by so we see no reason to not buy them. at least that's why I'm sliding down.

Can't make it a single day without a rationalization, eh Joe?

Name me one fish in this ocean who would stop buying cigars if they stuck another tax on them! Face it, we're hopeless.

Re: Newbie advice - Go bigger

Agreed. Go bigger. I went from having maybe 8 cigars at one time over the years in a rubbermaid container (inside another rubbermaid container) to a R&J anniversary humidor....then I put a tray in it (didn't have one)....then ran out of room....then saw the Treasure dome on here, got on CBid got one...then went after a sampler with cigars so I'd have a dry box...now looking at a coolidor.
Basically I went from 8 cigars to about 250 in 8 weeks and am looking at box purchases now.
A slippery slope INDEED!

I admit, I was wrong and should have listened. I never really expected to find a good deal on cigars here in Canada. I figured to fill a 20 count would be like $400-500 here thanks to our taxes. I have learned much more now.
