Here is an example that worked out real well: the Famous 70th Ann. by Perdomo. I bought a box when they were released and they are a great stick and a good value, IMHO. I hardly ever do this, but I knew it would be a quality cigar because of Perdomo, I love corojos, and 5-packs are not available.

I buy a box of NC's every now and again, but mostly 5 packs and singles...When I buy CC's it is always a box because singles are not an option for me....so I rely on my fellow BOTL's to guide me in the right direction...I havent really been disappointed so far...

I would not and do not purchase a box without first having tried the sticks I'm purchasing.

It is a particularly bad habit of mine. I've gotten a few duds that way, for sure. Maybe I'll learn.
I do try to research the reviews so I can have an idea about what the cigars are like, but I don't always get it right. That's OK, I smoke 'em anyway. For me. a lot of the thrill is getting a new box in the mail, and trying the smokes. It's great when you get a gem!!!

Generally, I'm able to behave myself, but every once in a while a deal comes along that I just can't refuse. Usually on something I've had friends say very good things about. So far, I've been pretty lucky and liked everything that I've bought.

Purchased a few boxes without first trying the cigar, however it was because there was a good sale, positive reviews on the cigar and I was familiar with the line.

Re: How Many of You Take Chances on a Box?

I bought my first two boxes of cigars blindly. One was a box of Exiles, the other was a 12er box of Montecristo Afriques. I think I got lucky because they're great smokes!

Once or twice but it has to be a brand that I am familar with, or if a fivepack is almost the price of a box on sale.

Always do, based on people's opinions on this board. Seems to have worked out pretty good so far.

Re: How Many of You Take Chances on a Box?

Given the wording of the poll, I guess I can't vote, but I've never bought a blind box of NC. I need to have smoked multiples of something before I will pull the trigger on a box. In all reality, I don't buy many boxes. I'm lucky that I have a super-cheap B&M nearby who gives me a discount on singles.

Re: How Many of You Take Chances on a Box?

I have blindly bought 2 boxes or NCS and they are both fantastic sticks, I was however familiar with the other lines these companies make so I was pretty sure I was getting a good product.

I have started purchasing more boxes, it just seems to be cheaper that way, and now I always have smokes to share

usually I like to try them before I pull the trigger, but if its a insane deal, what the hell

Thumbs up Re: How Many of You Take Chances on a Box?

If presented with an offer I can't refuse on a cigar that has a strong reputation I will pull the trigger and buy them. The savings on purchasing a whole box is worth it. I used to only buy singles, but since I have been smoking more frequently, the savings in buying boxes and bundles outways the advantage of enjoying a variety of cigars all of the time.

The last purchase I made was in fact a blind purchase. I was at Cigars International in Bethlehem, PA and they were having an event featuring the Perdomo line of cigars. In fact, I was able to meet Nick Perdomo at the shop and he was the one who recommended I try the Patriarch line. Not that having the designer of the cigar recommend the purchase isn't enough, they also gave me a free bundle of various Perdomo cigars, a great single torch lighter and a Perdomo t-shirt!. The extra swag was nice, but I must admit that the cigar has turned out to be one of my favorites, but at the $6 price point, is a little too expensive to become an every day cigar for me. So, I am unsure if this purchase was a blessing or a curse. lol
