A Rant/Convo starter about Nub,Cain, and Sam L.

OK so I gotta say something that i've been thinkin about for awhile, but before I do lemme just give a disclaimer: I realize that alot of people here love nub and are excited about cain cigars and I'm not trying to put those people down or talk shit on them, or the cigars themselves.

SO when nub first came out, me and my buddies all wrote it off as a big gimmick, which is a beleif that we all stand by. Most of the guys have tried Nub and all agree that they are OK cigars but in general they're just a marketing machine that get WAY more attention then they deserve.

Now that cain cigars are coming out, we all feel the same way. It's like just another marketing ploy by Sam L. Not to talk bad on Sam because he's just doin what he can to make a buck, but it seems like everything he comes out with has to have some kind of 'angle' that he can market the shit out of. Dont get me wrong, it's great business and he's a smart guy for it.

I just felt like rambling about this since I see everyone so excited about the release of cain cigars. Im wondering if anyone else out there feels the same way? or is everyone attracted to the modern, trendy ads and "Rebel Without a Cause" Marketing angle.

I agree. I would also like to point out that the Nub was not the first cigar of it's type. There have been quite a few "short, fat" cigars made. Some have survived and some have not.

IMO the "sweet spot" bull is just that. The so called "sweet spot" in a cigar is caused by a combination of things such as the cherry warming up the tobacco, the smoke passing through it, etc.

I have no problem with people enjoying the cigars because we don't all enjoy the same things but I prefer the marketing to reflect the truth, which is, "these are short, fat cigars".

Of course all of this is just my

i agree with you and donny about the marketing of nub cigars... i have never been impressed by them and really dont understand all the hype... cain, however is a totally different matter... i could care less about the rebel w/o a cause marketing and the dudes on bikes, the smoke is excellent and at a wonderful price point... im a tough critic of cigars esp. new releases but Sam has a winner with cain...

Re: A Rant/Convo starter about Nub,Cain, and Sam L.

Thanks for the post dom, I can agree as well on the nub line of cigars. Was alot of marketing and hype allaround for the cigar line. I do like the nub line of cigars, they arent my favorite by any means but a good cigar. If we remember back to when nub was first launch ed it was hyped up for a long time before it was even relaesed. the hype was there which made it initially so popular.

The cain cigars, I believe are a great cigar. not too much to market since they are of a normal size but the fact that it is a majority ligero cigar. I dont remember too much hype on these smokes being release. I know that Sam is giving away a motorcycle with the release of cain.

I think that cain is a great cigar. I have only had the habono as of yet and it was "good" , one dimensional but smooth and balanced. I have the others to try in the next few days to really confirm that I like them alot.

I guess here is a way of looking at it. All cigars companies are big on marketing and their events they do. Look at CAO for example. they dont have the "nub" size but they are marketing wizards there. they have given out motorcycles and all kinds of stuff to draw people to their cigars.

I try not to look at the marketing aspect of everything in the cigar world. I look into the cigar itself, if i love it or hate it.

But I can see your frustration since there are many other brands that do not advertise at all.

I found the Connie to be bland and the Cameroon to be hideous. And because of the hype surrounding them, I actually felt guilty about hating them. LOL

Every one has their own tastes. Every ones plate is different. I wouldnt feel bad for not liking them. It is pretty hard to like every cigar made.

the only thing I would say is smoke a few more and see if your tastes have changed.

Re: A Rant/Convo starter about Nub,Cain, and Sam L.

I'll preface by stating that Oliva makes solid products and holds high standards. That said, they are guilty of marketing in an effort to support that whole 'selling to make a profit' scheme. It works and thats the damn point.
Make cigars and sell image. Harley-Davidson has been doing this with motorcycles for decades. If a whole generation will shave their heads and get a tribal tattoos in order to express their "individuality", they certainly will succumb to fad in hardcore cigar marketing too. Pete Johnson exemplifies it. Forget that the product is just good. Its also a membership card to 'club too cool'. Now you can sell more and charge more. Even candy flavored cigars can become hardcore if you veer from tradition in packaging and call them Acid. Forget cashing in on a popular cable series about the modern mafia. Even Tony Soprano didn't smoke CAO's, but you might.
Nub, huh. Nub is a funny looking cigar that is neither exceptional or bad. Just a way to get attention for the tobacco leaves that you are selling. The product doesn't matter to people that buy image. The success is measured in viral marketing hype and dollars in the bank.

Well, I disagree. From the limited nubs I have smoked (Habano), this cigar has a ton of flavours that I really enjoy. Dom, you wrote them off before you even tried them so you had no chance of appreciating what was there.

So, my question to you is. Are the Miami knuckles a marketing gimmick as well? Just curious. I have never had but some are coming my way.

The miami may be a gimmick, who knows. I think all different sizes have their place. All sizes have a different profile or taste. The miami knuckle is my favorite size in the line. I feel it has a little more kick, more spice.

The nub was the development to a new size, now a few manufacturers are making cigars in the saize, not only the knuckle but a turrent cigars are with Te-Amo and even gram Habano has a shorty size out on the market.

Actually that is false. There have been short, fat cigars made before the Nub. Sam's marketing was geared more toward the "sweet spot" stuff.

Re: A Rant/Convo starter about Nub,Cain, and Sam L.

I still talk with those who just love these cigars and I wanted to see what the big deal was when they first came out. I have tried every single Nub at least 3 times. I, like alot of others fell victim to the rampant marketing of these cigars which touted "the sweet spot" and that appealed to me. When I smoked them I never got the "sweet spot" at all and if anything these cigars to me, are very one dimensional. I like a complex cigar and not one Nub cigar is complex. If Sam ever comes out with a cigar that is in this size and is complex I will try it but as for this brand I don't think I will ever try another one. He might as well have sold it in a Churchill size and then you could cut it in half and have 2 nubs for the price of one as much as the Nub costs.

I like the Nub's....Habano, Maduro and Cameroon, in that order.

I have really enjoyed the Cain's, like both but believe the Maduro pack's a little more punch than the Habano.

Marketing is part of the game, not just in cigars, but in damn near anything anyone is trying to sell, in my opinion.

"Rebel Without a Cause" Marketing angle.

I could probably also say that same thing about Pete Johnson of Tatuaje and Dion Giolito of Illusione/Cruzado fame
