How much uneven burn before correcting?

This is a discussion on How much uneven burn before correcting? within the General Cigar Discussion forums, part of the The Cigar Lounges at Puff category; I'd like your opinions on this. I can't stand it if the burn starts pushing maybe a half inch out ...

How much uneven burn before correcting?

I'd like your opinions on this. I can't stand it if the burn starts pushing maybe a half inch out of whack and it doesn't appear to be self correcting. I'll moisten the hotspot before then, but break out the torch at that point.

Am I wrong?

Sounds right to me ,,,you don't want to get a full canoe before touching it up.. Always happens to me when smoking in the wind.

Sounds about right to me also. I usually will give it a light when I see some of the filler not burning. That may be a little before 1/2 inch. Experience dictates that the uneven burn is beyond self repair.

Re: How much uneven burn before correcting?

I generally try to correct it once, maybe twice if it's a smoke I was really wanting. Other than that, I just leave it alone until it's too dangerous... or embarrassing!

Depends on my pyro-maniacal tendencies that day. If I am in that mood, I touch up just about anything. Not saying its right, just my thang!

Re: How much uneven burn before correcting?

I let it go about half an inch and then if I see its not correcting itself I will fetch the torch.
usually it fixes itself if its a decent quality smoke

Re: How much uneven burn before correcting?

my best buddy will sit with his torch and correct a burn if it's 1/4 inch uneven.

Im a little less anal about it but if I see the burn go uneven I'll correct after about a 1/2 inch unevenness just to try to nip the problem in the butt before it gets outta hand.

Re: How much uneven burn before correcting?

This just goes to my OCD about a perfect burn and when I suspect that it is going south I will put on the burners and keep it on course. I don't put the torch directly on the tobacco but just just enough where the heat of the torch burns the tobacco.

Re: How much uneven burn before correcting?

Nah, 'wrong' is personal preference. I don't personally let it go beyond... oh a little over 1/8th of an inch, but lately I've been working on letting it get to about 1/4 of an inch. I've let it go on for about 1/2 inch, but I always feel like I need to intervene at that point. I am pretty AR about my tobacco rituals lol!

After I burned my hand (don't ask), I've become a bit more lenient on correcting!

Re: How much uneven burn before correcting?

I can usually get it to self correct.
If it gets much past a half inch I might give it a touch up.

Re: How much uneven burn before correcting?

I'll check the filler just inside the wrapper at about a quarter inch and touch it up then if there's a thick wall of non-burning filler at that spot. If it's really thin, or even just the wrapper that hasn't burned yet, then I'll give it until a half inch just to see if it catches up.

Re: How much uneven burn before correcting?

I love threads like this because they are so handy for new fishes....I let mine go about 1/2 or so and usually hit with a flame and all is right in the world pretty quickly....
