Intense Barnyard Opus aroma

I recently purchased my first two Opus X sticks from a member online. I got them for a decent price and just wanted to see about the hype.

The first thing that struck me was how bumpy they look. There are also dark blotches on one of the wrappers. My unrefined palate and nose would describe the aroma as intense barnyard, which I've never really detected before so I may be wrong but these things stink. I'm open to new experiences and I've seen reviews describe "wonderful barnyard" but what concerns me is I don't see anything of the sort in Opus reviews. These supposedly have a few years rest on them.

I know, I know. Caveat Emptor.

What do you think?

I would of liked to see a pic of the sticks in question before you smoked them

I have seen some of the OPUS Xs with some nasty looking wrappers (for a premium cigar) and still be genuine and still taste good too.

I would describe the Opus smell as very sweet...almost too sweet. After some resting the smell really smooths out. I agree...the wrappers are never perfect for an expensive cigar.

Re: Intense Barnyard Opus aroma

I'm interested in this. I can't stand barnyard smelling cigars, just a big turnoff to me. I've never had an opus but if they do stink like that I probably wouldn't want to :/

Re: Intense Barnyard Opus aroma

Barnyard smell is not part of the Opus profile as I have smoked enough of them. They aren't typically bumpy nor blotchy as they go through a rather rigorous quality control. I don't want to say that you received "fakes" but the description you are giving doesn't quite match this great cigar.

Re: Intense Barnyard Opus aroma

I think we all need to see pics before we start calling them fakes! Also I'm surprised you never smelled a barnyard smell from a cigar before. How new are you to cigars? I find this smell a lot in Maduros. If your newer to cigars maybe you pallet and smells are just off a little. I will smell my Opus wrappers when I get home today, I have a couple of them.

Re: Intense Barnyard Opus aroma

They may just be very fresh cigars. The Barnyard smell is often caused by ammonia, which will dissipate if you let them rest.

Here's a link with pictures of virtually every Opus X vitola made. How do yours compare?

Re: Intense Barnyard Opus aroma

Here's the pics. I hope. First time posting pics. It's difficult to capture the bumpiness and fugliness of the robusto. The power ranger looks better but with same powerful barnyard aroma.

Okay, tell me I've overreacted. Hold on, I have a couple more pics. Thanks.

Discoloration, bumps, veins

This one shows some of the bumps on the robusto
