Opus X... speechless

Tonight was a special night. I had just landed 2 years of solid employment on another show that picks up right after the one I am currently working on. I realize that it may not sound like a real job, but Im a freelance lighting tech for movies, tv and such. In my situation steady work is like a dream come true. So I decided to celebrate by breaking out my very first Opus X! This thing has been resting in my humidor for almost a year and honestly Im at a loss for words... just amazed. Which brings me to the point of this thread. What is your first Opus X story?

First let me say congratulations on lining up employment! In these times that's great, especially for a freelance! That has to be comforting to know.
I currently have one Opus X that I have not tried yet. The BOTL that I got it from said it's ready and has plenty of age on it but something has held me back. Maybe the right time will offer itself soon.

Re: Opus X... speechless

I've only smoked one and that was a gift from my son. He over-paid at an airport at $37. Nevertheless it was special to me because I know it made him feel good. I smoked it on my birthday last year and it was fantastic. He's in the Air Force and is due to come home Oct 8th so I might splurge and buy another one myself and smoke it then.

Congratulations on the job! That's the kind of news we don't hear often enough these days. As to the Opus X, I haven't tried one yet but I have two of them slumbering in my humidor right now, figured I'd let them sleep for a year before trying them.

Re: Opus X... speechless

My first Opus X? My only one (mainly because of price). A year ago I bought one at a small B&M (formerly liquor store, apparently) in Seattle on an epic road trip. Smoked it after the trip. It was a life-changing cigar...for the first two-inches. After that it tasted like nothing. Straight up air. But because of those first two inches, I'm inclined to try again.

Re: Opus X... speechless

Glad to hear that your job is working out and an Opus X cigar is a great cigar. I have had my share of them in the last 10 years and they always satisfy. When you have at least a year age on them they are pretty hard to beat and I have had my share of great cigars. If you get them at sticker price they are really a good cigar but if you are paying what some do like $25 on up I think that is far too much.

Re: Opus X... speechless

Which vitola did you smoke? Some are definitely better than others, but all are good in their own rights.

I was living in the western US from 1971-2000, so we didn't get Opus, rather we got the DC Maximus'. My first Opus was an original release robusto that I was gifted in '99. The setting couldnt have been better; a snowy evening in a mountain top condo, in front of a huge window. I'd been smoking 99% CC at the time, so this cigar really shocked me. To this day, it's the best cigar I've ever smoked. Simply amazing.

The closest thing I've smoked to that recently was a GoF Carlito from 05 that I smoked with Cigar Man Andy this week. That also blew my mind.

Re: Opus X... speechless

I bought two Opii back around Christmas of last year. I smoked one, the other is still resting. It was a very good cigar. For the price and reputation, it should have been orgasmically good, and it wasn't, at least for me. I guess I don't have the palate to fully appreciate them. I'm not saying I would turn one down, but for half the price, I can have a Hemingway Signature. You know those Opus tins with three robustos in them? My B&M has them. For $100. I just can't do it. I think I may not be the only one who can't do it. All the Opii are on a window ledge, right above the LGC's and next to all the other Fuentes, so I look at them every time I go in. I can't be 100% sure, but I think they've sold one tin in the last year.

Re: Opus X... speechless

My first Opus X experience was insane. I remember it very well....it was unlike anything I've had before. IMO, they are just way too inconsistent. But when they are on, it's heaven in a cigar.

WOW, congrats on the job and Opus X cigars are a treat. My first one was Christmas morning 2008. I was freezing sitting in my garage but this cigar was soooo good that I couldnt feel the cold. Just a great smoke

My 1st was a nicely aged one that was shared with the man who with out knowing me or my wife offered to marry us..and BOtL off this forun no less...the cigar..so-so..but the setting was great..it really set the meaning of Brother of the Leaf for me. That was 3 yrs ago and I am glad I can still call him a friend and the opus is still so-so..now an Anejo on the other hand...LOL

Congrats on the job..in this time its nice to have a steady job!
