Something I just realized

As I am new to smoking cigar varieties, but not to cigars, I recently read something I didnt realize.
I know a lot of cigars change as you smoke them. I always thought that was incidental to the tobacco and the heat changing as the cigar lenght decreases.
But now I see that the cigar manufactures also do that on purpose when they make their blends, to have the cigar flavors and intensities change on purpose, by a combination of different fillers placed in different areas of the cigar.
I always thought that once a manufacturer had a cigar and blend in mind, they tried to make a consisten smoke as possible from start to finish.
I guess I am mistaken.
Looking to learn more about this.I have read three primers on cigars now, and dont remember ever seeing this discussed .

Much regards Jerry

Re: Something I just realized

If you smoke different size cigars within the brand you will notice different flavors as well. You will get more taste from a lancero than you will with a Robusto or Churchill. The wrapper becomes more involved with a smaller RG cigar as the ratio of wrapper/filler tends to change the complexity. When I smoke an Opus X cigar like the Reserve and then smoke the smaller RG Opus I get a more pronounced flavor and complexity.

Cigars that I have seen rolled are not exactly the same and you can't roll two cigars exactly the same as one will have filler from one leaf than another. They will be very close but not identical. I can smoke a Partagas Black Label one day and smoke another one from the same box a few days later and it won't be exactly the same. It might be a bit weaker or stronger. The best we can hope for in our cigars is that uniform taste we get we when we smoke them.

I haven't tried them yet, but the Viaje 50/50 line is supposed to be two distinct blends in a single cigar. Starts out mild-medium bodied then develops into much bolder full flavors midway through.

Definitely interesting. Looking forward to trying these out.

Gary, not sure , but I think you missed my point. Its that cigar manufacturers purposely, put different tobaccos, into different parts on the cigars, so the cigar is different as you smoke them. They want the individual cigar to have multiple personalities. Of course all of the same type and brand should have the same consistancy of this change. Not all cigars are done this way, but some are, and I never realized that.

Much regards Jerry

I have to agree with you on this. I have talked with a lot of rollers and manufacturers about this and while they don't like to say they do it on purpose it is a part of the business. Some rollers will do it because it was how they were trained. Some manufacturers insist on taking different tobaccos to give the cigar that extra bit of complex flavor. When you go to your cigar place ask one of the rollers how he was trained. I've got to believe from the taste of those cigars that they pratice putting in different leaves. You can also tell by watching them and how they roll the cigars and where they draw the fillers from.

Re: Something I just realized

It just goes to show that no matter how much you learn about cigars, there is always something new to be learned. If anybody else has been listening to the last few Dog Watch episodes they have been delving into blending and how the different blenders aproach the same problem- very interesting listening to be sure.

Re: Something I just realized

Some cigars are consistent start to finish. I'm thinking of La Tradition Cubana Churchills. Others change and develop different flavors as I smoke them. Some of the Pepins do that, start out really spicy and then get earthy and leathery. Some of my CC's hit me with all kinds of nuances of flavor as I smoke them. I'm supposing that the blenders and manufacturers have this in mind when they make their cigar blends. Also, I understand that how they place the leaves in the cigar affects how the flavor develops. The stems and leaf tops have different levels of flavor intensity. So you could design a cigar to be consitent or changable depending how you arrange the leaves when rolling.

That is what I was trying to say in one of my earlier posts but it went sideways a bit. The tobacco leaf itself as you said has its own flavors and when you change the way the leaf is put into the finished product gives you a different complexity. I love cigars in that they can be put together in so many different ways. In my next life I will be a manufacturer.
