Rocky Patel Edge Question

So my buddies and I hit our local B&M (Serious Cigars) for a few graduation cigars (graduation ceremony is tomorrow morning!).

One of them just wanted a flavoured stick- so he got a Kahlua (DE).

The other has been a cigarette smoker for 8 months or so and has had a few cigars. He enjoys the fuller flavoured sticks he has had.

He wanted something REALLY strong. I told him about the RP Edge and the La Hoy de Nic. (or whatever the name is).

I warned him though.

He went ahead with it.

So how heavy is this stick? Is it just hype? Or will he have a headache and a stomach ache?

I will make sure he eats before hand.

I have one (I think) in my humi now. I was told it's a medium-full stick.

Re: Rocky Patel Edge Question

RP Edge is on the full side, not a real killer but does have some kick. It is very smooth, which tends to make you believe it is milder than it really is. Not a cigar I would give to a beginner, but once you start gravitating toward more full bodied sticks this is a good one.

I tend to like fuller smokes but the Edge does absolutely nothing for me . Tried about 5 of them and haven't liked anything about them yet , taste real harsh and ashy . The la Hoya de Nicaragua Antano is a great cigar IMHO . For a real head spinner have your buddy try a La Flor Dominicana double Ligero .

Re: Rocky Patel Edge Question

See that is strange to me.

I keep reading things that say it isn't as full as it says.

The box even says "warning-professional smokers only- smoke while sitting".

Hmm.

The Edge has actually gone through several cycles. When it took off as a "hot item" the supply was all fully aged and excellent. Deceptively smooth and rather strong. When demand over-ran supply Mr Patel started shipping younger cigars. These were less strong and were not nearly as good overall. Then recently they started actually selling banded versions which must be made out of completely different tobacco, as I would not even call them the same cigar. A perfect example of greed causing a very good product to become crappy; lots of places won't even stock them any more because they can't be assured of what they are buying. I have about 8 of the maduro torpedo's left of the "good" product...

Re: Rocky Patel Edge Question

I have a so-so impression of the Edge. I've smoked a really good one and one that was very blah. I wouldn't consider either one a cigar that would sit me on my A$$.

If he wants strong, but great flavor, try the Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 Gran Consul. This one has set my head a swimin' consistantly.

Re: Rocky Patel Edge Question

If I had to choose between the two, the Joya de nicaragua would win hands down, if its the 1970 Antano you're talking about .. I LOVE that cigar. Can't get enough of. The edge is good, but has never been a head spinner for me.

Well - you don't mind if I disagree with you as to what you are implying with your statements here. We have all had cigars that seem to be different at times. And one person's idea of strong can be mild to another. In addition there are several versions of the Edge - maduro, corojo, lites, etc - even the size of the cigar can and does contribute to strength and taste, we all know this.
So nope - sorry - without first hand proof - I don't believe any of it.

Re: Rocky Patel Edge Question

The JDN Gran Consul is the only cigar today that made me sick for a bit. granted it hadnt eaten that day, and wasnt expecting it. I was a great cigar, and luckily, i didnt get sick until i stood up...

Another monster is the LFD Double Ligero. EXTREME spice. didnt seem to pack as much power to me as the JD .

Both as menntion prior will indeed, knock you on your ass.

Re: Rocky Patel Edge Question

The Corojo is not as full as the maduro but both are relativly full. I burn a lot of these, I find the quite tasty, but there are sort of one deminsional. The LFD double Ligaro will make him double over tho.

I have been eyeballing these for a few weeks. Which do you recommend? The unbanded torps versus the banded?

On a sidenote, the JDN Antano's are awesome for people that like strength with full flavor.
