Developing palate or going backwards?

I've noticed that I'm smoking and enjoying milder cigars now that a few months ago I would have claimed had no flavor. I still enjoy mediums primarily, but when I come off of 3rd shift, a nice mild cigar and cup of decaf and watching the sun come up is becoming my routine!

Just ordered some 5 Vegas Gold nuggets and Park Avenue 44's for this very reason!

Am I going backwards?

No backwards or forwards - If you enjoy it, then just enjoy. Sounds like a nice morning routine.

Re: Developing palate or going backwards?

wouldn't call it going backwards - isn't it all about smoking what you like? I buy and smoke what I see is medium to full, but it all depends on the time of day, and what my eye fancies when I open the humidor .. It must be easier to develop a palate on medium cigars, although they may not be as complex, but a serious blast of pepper can really ruin the next 45 minutes of smoke for me .. not to mention the nicotine

Re: Developing palate or going backwards?

I've noticed the same sort of trend in my smoking habits over the past 18 months or so... I started smoking a lot more frequently (from 3-5 a week to 2-3 or more a day), and I think it MAY have something to do with a more developed palate being able to pick up on flavors that were previously missed/overlooked... So a mild smoke that was too subtle before can become a great, complex smoke..

Either way, as everyone here will agree - Smoke whatever you like, as long as you like it! Aloha!

I think everyone enjoys a nice mild smoke. I think some people are just too macho to admit it. I guess thats just my point of view, but how can you enjoy a cigar when it just keeps blasting you with pepper everytime you take a puff. Don't get me wrong i love spicy and hot, just on my food not my cigars.

Re: Developing palate or going backwards?

Two things come to mind...

First, it's probably that your palate is getting more sensitive to flavors and you can now pick up things that you used to miss out on. So, I would say you're "developing". I'd like to get to that point some day, but right now I just taste tobacco...but that's good stuff too!

Second, it could be that we go through cycles of what we enjoy. For example, I'll go through periods of liking different music from country, to heavy metal, to soft rock, to talk radio in the space of a year sometimes...i haven't been on the country thing for a few years now, for which I'm grateful. My guess is that the cigar we choose from the humidor is the one that will most compliment our mood at the time and the changing of the seasons has made it more enjoyable for you to just sit and relax and not want to get hit in the teeth by a strong stogie.

That's just my noob view of things.

Re: Developing palate or going backwards?

I usually prefer something stronger with more flavor. But some days, I just want to enjoy something light and smooth. I think it depends on my mood.
Stressed = Stronger
Just want to relax = Milder

Re: Developing palate or going backwards?

A lot of seasoned smokers prefer mild smokes. I know some who like to start with coffee and a mild cigar, then ramp up to stronger smokes throughout the day. If may just depend on what your eat/drink before or during the smoke, or just how you feel that day.

I'm always afraid that I'll buy a box of something I like now, then my tastes will change before I get around to them. I have a full spectrum of cigars in my collection, and just a few go-to smokes.
