Well S.F. is out against cigars on golf course
Clouds of controversy waft around Michael Jordan and his cigar
By Jay Busbee San Francisco has a bit of a rep of being a progressive city, and as such, things like smoking don't go over real well with a segment of the populace. So when a San Francisco administrator spotted someone smoking a cigar on public property, well, he hit the roof. Never mind that the "someone" was Michael Jordan and the public property was Harding Park Golf Course, the host of the Presidents Cup -- heads must roll, baby!Calling MJ "Spare the Air Jordan" (ha! you see what he did there? clever!), Recreation and Park general manager Phil Ginsburg told the San Francisco Chronicle that he's already sent an email to the PGA Tour that this will not stand. "It was sort of a gentle nudge reminding them that smoking is illegal, and that we would appreciate their support." Of course, that didn't stop this from turning into a full-scale CigarGate, with everyone from Jordan to Stewart Cink weighing in on the pros and cons of lighting up a stogie. (By the way, the other fellow in that photo is former President Bill Clinton, who's also hanging at the Cup. I mention this for two reasons: 1. because in some other news accounts, someone felt it necessary to identify Clinton as the one on the right, and 2. there are jokes to be made here that I will not make, seeing as how I like my job.) The violation of city rules comes with a $100 fine, so I'm thinking Jordan could smoke enough to give the entire city cancer and still be just fine. Jordan violates city rules on smoking Jerry |

I believe about half the people in San Fran are against anything that is normal and sane.

I am smoking a very mild cigar. Half way through the churchill, I see a 55 year old, african american female, obese around 300-325 lbs, about 5 foot 6, come walking towards the park in a jogging suit. She could hardley waddle her body. She sits at a bench, approx 30 -35 yards away from me. You could not make out her facial features from this distance. Everytime I proceeded to take a puff and exhale, she would start coughing loudly. Now, it was a windy day, and the smoke if it was possible would take at least a half minute to reach her. But the volume of smoke was maybee good for three feet. She starting producing large gagging coughs every time I put the cigar to my mouth. Anyway, I ignored her, and the cigar eventually finished. I stayed on the bench, enjoying the weather. Eventually she got up and started to walk in my direction. I was expecting a confrontation, so I took our a dollar cheapo from the cigar caddy, cut it real quick, and as she neared me, I put the stogie to my mouth and lit the flame, and started puffing like a dragon, to produce all the smoke I could. I think she got nervous, when she got near me, and walked past me, making no eye contact. I should start coughing every time she lifts a spoon or a fork, or bites into a burger king. I put the cigar out, and stood up to got to the truck, and let me tell you. Smoking a stogie like that real fast, made me wobbly from the nicotene. I dont enjoy that so much. LOL Much regards Jerry |

![]() San Franciso is one of those cities everyone wants to visit but the smart ones go home because you'd be crazy to live there. I was born 50 miles from there and spent a lot of time in this area but I wouldn't live there for free.

I thought San Francisco was one of the great cities I had ever visited. I loved the cool summer climate, the foggy season in August, the beer music clubs, where if you were under 18 I believe, you got one proof beer, and over 18 a more stouter brew. People were polite, and the town was very children friendly, with some of the first type of museums and exhibits that were for the little ones that I ever ran across. The tea gardens were beautiful. One funny story(Yes another one, I just thought about), is that we went to have chinese food in the chinatown area. We ordered wonton soup and a bunch of dishes to share for around 8 people. When the soup came, we asked for the dry noodles we were accumstomed to. The waiter says"no noodle, you must be from New York" and walked away in a snit. So no noodle for us. LOL Just a small remembereance, but I will always have a fond memory of San Fran. I do not think I could walk up and down those hills anymore. I had an old car at the time, and prayed the brakes would hold, every time we went down a hill. It was a little hairy. LOL Regards Jerry |

It is what it is. I'd be more concerned with whether or not he replaces his divets personally. Itd be pretty sweet if he lit his next one with a $100 bill then payed the fine while laughing.

Re: Well S.F. is out against cigars on golf course
Went to Sf once, remarked to my friend that was driving how beautiful it was, how much color there was, the bay, it was just a so very beautiful, very pretty.
Then my friend next to me said "Its just all the feminine influence, we wont be here long". Bada bing!

I remember a laid back town that was laizze faire(spelling) Do your thing, but do not impede anyone else. Oh how things change. I wore my uniform once or twice, and was never bothered having it on. Maybee they were afraid of me, but I dont think so. Very polite people back then. I will always hold s.f. in my heart in a certain way. Jerry |

Re: Well S.F. is out against cigars on golf course
I spent a couple of weeks at Christmas time in the Bay area staying with my mom who was working down there. We stayed in Palo Alto, but spent some time in SF and Berkly and San Jose. It is a beautifull place to be in the winter - not wearing a coat in December was a new experiance for me. I picked up a key chain with a pic of SF on it, and for quite a while after I got back home to -20 degrees C, and snow, I truly had left my heart in San Francisco. My only regret was in not going to Alcartraz.
Now, with the atitude they are showing down there, I do not think I would want to go back.

Re: Well S.F. is out against cigars on golf course
I don't get the smoking laws. Inside is one thing but on a golf course! That is just about the last place you could ever offend someone by smoking.
Now throwing your butt on the green, that's another story, should be punishable by no less then a slow miserable and public death! |

Re: Well S.F. is out against cigars on golf course
San Francisco's influence seems to be reaching all throughout California. Down around LA, people are becoming the same way (mostly rich soccer moms, ultra liberal progressives, etc). Can't a guy just have a smoke without disturbing anyone in peace?
