My review of a hoya de monterrey sultan

Since I had a rather large sized 30 year old hoya(kept only in tube) that I spoke about in a recent post and trying to revive, I thought since I have never smoked that brand to give it a try.
A local indian candy store, magazines, newspapers, school supplies , soda , etc store, that I discovered had a large cabinet humidor in the rear had a box
of hoyas in the sultan size(my estimate) for at least three years.

They have probably a 5000 cigar cabinet, that their sales have dropped over the years, as the older cigar smoking folks hit the dust, but speaking to the young indian fellow a few months ago, he knew what he had , and was very proud of the cigars.

He doesnt know much about cigars, but he knows what he has, and knew the rh, and which brands sell more.

Now this humidor is not filled up by any means, but about fifty boxes of cigars. Mostly romeos, macs, uppmans, teamo, hoya, and a few other brands.

I have been espying the hoyas for about 3 months. I asked him, and he says the box is probably about 3 years old, as they dont sell very well, because of the size.

Okay, I buy one. It was nine dollars. (All the cigars sold in stores near me are way overpriced, but now for a three year aged cigar, I thought lets try it out.

It felt beautiful, smelled beautiful, just had that slight , slight sponge that I like, consistent all the way through and smelled delicious.

This size is around 7.25 by 54.

There is not much to say about this cigar. Constructed beautiful. Lit with no problem. Burned evenly, and no touch ups ever needed.

It produced volumes of smoke for about an hour and 15 minutes. The smell and the aroma were consistant. A very mild cigar, uncomplicated, with tons of mint, cedar, and as it burned down to less then half, a slight bit of spice,

This would absolutely be a great beginners cigar. The draw for me, Was the best I ever had in such a large cigar. I wish every cigar I had , had the same draw.

I am sure that these can be had for a lot less money on auction, but not with 3 years of age on them.

I would definatley buy this one again, for certain situations. To pass out to the very ocassional cigar smoker, who I know wants a big manly cigar(lol) but really doesnt want anything intense.

In fact these would be great cigars to pass out for baby announcements, wedding party etc, where an experienced smoker would love the draw, and not mind too badly the lack of complexity and to the first time or new , or occassional smoker.

For what it is, a darn fine smoke, and I think in the future, I will explore the hoya de monterrey brand, a little bit further, to see what else they have to offer.

Much regards Jerry

After writing this, I did some research on this cigar, and it seems like its listed as a medium to full honduran cigars. I got absolute no nicotene feel(and I am sensitive to nicotene) and the aroma and intensity to me was mild manybee mild to medium. So buyer beware.
