Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

In the quest to find great cigars, you will end up with many sticks you don't really care for. There are a few different things I try to do with these. The mild ones I save for those friends who come over and want to smoke a cigar, but aren't cigar smokers. The strong ones which I think are good, but not great I age and try again a year or so later. The vast majority I am saving for bombs, or trades.

As far as cheapies go (anyone else fall for the free cuba "deal"), toss em, or give them to someone who likes cheap cigars. Sometimes i try to smoke on while mowing the lawn. I also tried to "infuse" some, but haven't had much success.

If you got some good stuff that you just don't care for, you can try to send some bombs. If shipping is too much, try to find some friends or acquaintances who smoke and work out some trades.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I wish I had a lot of a bunch of different types. I made the mistake of smoking one Graycliff 1666 out of a sampler, decided I loved it, and bought a whole box. After the second one I tried I found I didn't like it as much as I thought. Now I have most of a box I don't want to smoke. Same thing with a box of Graycliff G2's, and Rocky Patel R4's. The only boxes I've bought that I'm actually happy with, are my CAO Italia Novella's and MoW Ruinations. Now there are a hundred other cigars I would love to try, but I just don't have the space.

You could offer some up for sale in the WTS. You know the saying, one man's trash....

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I wish I had your problem! I buy singles too but not in the same quantity as you do obviously. I do like to track them though, as someone else has already said I track them in a spreadsheet too, including the name, ring gauge, length, how much I paid, rating from an online source if one exists, and my own rating & comments. My goal is to buy the ones I really like and weed out the ones I don't.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

Funny thread! I think we are all either in this stage, past this stage, or unknowingly, about to enter this stage. I'm basically in the same boat you are in. Lots of great suggestions here. Should be no problem to get rid of your excess.
But you are clearly in the stage of experimentation. At some point ( I sure hope ) you will know what you like. But you will always be looking for something new. But hopefully, in a much more subdued way.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I first said no way, Now as I cram more and more with daily deliveries to the point I finally ordered the Pienza Tower humidor. I realize still naw can't have to many.

I don't really have any so far I don't like though I haven't tried all I have yet. Now getting ready to venture into the CC market because maybe all the bad ones I have smoked were fake. I am going slowly into this new world and if I succeed I can have the best of both worlds and yet I bet..

I will still think it not enough. LOL

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

Lots of great advice here - and to answer my own question: no, you cannot have too many different cigars - if I thought so, I probably wouldn't have bought a second humidor .. Also it's hard to part with any of them, since they were all bought with serious consideration at the time - I just don't like the taste of some of them, or I forgot how they tasted, and moved on to something else, and don't feel the need to go back .. So I guess I'm a few steps further as to what might be box-worthy in my book ..

I'm going to a wedding this weekend, so I'm going to bring a handful of my lesser stogies, as most of the attendees will probably not enjoy a fine smoke anyways .. after that I think I'm going to source Puff members in Europe, and start a bombing raid over here .. any easy way to get addresses to European members?

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

When you walk into the liquor store and get a coke check out the size of the single door 7' coolers. Now once you have once of those in the living room full of cigars from the top to the bottom you probably won't have enough, but the old lady will more than likely think you have and try and cut you off from buying more. Don't let this deter you. What you do next is go out and get the biggest cooler you can find and tie it to the back of the truck and go to the nearest dirt road. Drag it around for several minutes until it's nice and dirty. You don't want to ruin the cooler, but you need to get it dirty on the outside so it doesn't look new and entice the curiosity of the old lady in the garage. Then put a bunch of fishing stickers on it. This will surely throw her off because we all know how bad our fishing coolers smell after hauling a few hundred pounds of Tuna back from Mexico. Then rotate the newest stock from the inside cooler to that cooler for long term storage. You need to be sure to hide it on the highest shelf in the garage behind the old iron weights and rusted dumbbells. If done correctly you will then have room for at least another 50 boxes. If that isn't enough room repeat the steps with 2nd cooler!

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

When I first started I ended up with a ton of singles of all different kinds. As time went on, I kinda got tired of having so many "just one of" cigars that I consolidated. Now, if I like something I try to buy a box of them and avoid just getting a lot of random singles.

This is such a great idea it has to work. There has to be a Pandoras Box of other great ideas lurking behind this one and I demand to read more. There should actually be a sub forum dedicated to this kind of theme of Great Ideas to be shared amongst the membership. Can I get an Amen???

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

Ahh too many cigars...

I've recently been pondering the idea of buying two of each "single" I go the local B&M to try out.

The reasoning is two fold. First I want to keep adding to my collection, because ya'll know when I'm buying that cigar I'm going straight to my cigar chair when I get home. Second, I want to see how the same cigar tastes after a given aging period (compared with notes taken from the first smoke).

I'm sure the humidor will fill up fast with that approach. Pretty sure the wife won't appreciate it though .... looks like another pair of shoes for her

Cheers,
Brad

ROFL - brilliant!!! especially since hauling tuna from Mexico to Denmark would be REALLY smelly!
