Can you have too many different cigars?

Lately I've been having trouble finding place for my cigars, so I did what everyone elso would have done - bought a second humidor ..

Going through the cigars it strikes me how many different ones I've got, and how on earth I'm going to go through all those different smokes, and what to do with the experience when I've smoked them .. I'm a fairly newbie smoker, and I still look for that one got-to smoke, but I have found out that I'm a medium-to-full-cigar-kinda-person, and also like to have my cigars be of a rather good quality ..

Influenced by this site and many other review sites, I've found myself purchasing alot of different cigars, just to try them, and I always buy two so they atleast get a second chance .. problem is, I rarely get to smoke cigar no 2 because I find something else that's interesting .. and, getting back to the question of quality, I've got quite a few cigars of questionable quality that I bought when I didn't know I would appreciate quality over quantity - and was keen to fill my humidor, just for show ..

I have a lot of great friends, sadly none of them appreciate a good smoke (or a bad one for that matter), so I can't really get rid of the cigars that, in my mind, just fill up my humidor .. and I'm not going to sit down on my one or two weekly smoke-nights and smoke a lousy smoke, I want a good experience every time, so I'm more or less stuck with a lot of smokes that I'm sure will go bland .. I know of Cigar Bombs, but being located in Europe, there's the trouble of customs and what-not - and I wouldn't want to send out smokes I don't wanna smoke myself to other BOTL ..

I'm drifting a little with regards to the topic of 'having too many different cigars', but what I would like to know is, am I the only one with this problem? My palate isn't really that developed so I only know when I hit a smoke that I like, and a smoke I don't ..
but I keep getting drawn into reviews that promise this and that, and I think "I gotta get me one of those!" .. Currently I've got an online shopping basket filled to the brim with one cigar I already have a few of, and two new ones I would like to try, but I'm starting to think I'm just confusing myself .. ??

sorry for rambling, hope I made some sort of sense to somebody

keep puffing!

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I too did this as a Noob. I saw how much cheaper it was to buy online and in quantity so got quite a few cigars in then either didn't like them or my tastes changed before i smoked them all so yes I have a lot of ones and twos in my humidor that i'm not all that excited to finish off.

Congrats its not just you

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

First of all, I think the question of "too many cigars" will elicit laughter here more than any advice.
That said, and my own chuckles out of the way, the answer is of course no. However, when you are newish to cigars, there is always the inevitability of accumulating some cigars of lesser report. I remember buying a bundle of cigars once that I thought was a super bargain, but then just wound up filling my only desktop with mediocre cigars. You too will learn, and with the help of the bros and sis's here you will come to know which cigars are your friends and which will be mere acquaintances.
In the meantime, smoke what you've got--you may have some pleasant surprises in there. Or, better yet, purge your humi and start bombin the hell out of some of the newbs here.
Whatever you do, enjoy yourself and the cigar adventure.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I have the same "problem". I probably have mor ethan 50 different types/brands of cigars. I wanted to try a lot of different smokes in the hopes of finding a handful I truly loved. I use a spreadsheet to track them as I smoke them so I can remember what I liked and what I didn't. I now have maybe 4 or 5 I really love, maybe twice that many I'd buy a five pack of now and then and maybe that many again I just don't like. I don't want to get rid of the singles and doubles I have yet to try because one of them might be that next great cigar. But what about the left overs of the brands/types I tried that are quality cigars, but aren't my cup of tea? Bomb someone!! I won't send out dog rockets, but I have tried some well liked cigars that I didn't like. Nothing wrong with gifting them to someone, especially if you know they would like them. Other than that, build a coolidor.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

NO

If you like all the cigars you have you have either just enough or not enough.

It depends on how often and what your looking for a smoke.

There is the early morning coffee smoke, the after a steak dinner smoke, the port and smoke, the make I could use a smoke smoke, the time to reflect smoke, the man I love this smoke smoke, the I only have an hour to smoke smoke, the wife is gone for the night smoke, the golf course smoke, the just going to have a smoke smoke, the special occation smoke, the big sale smoke, the favorite cigar smoke, the my BOTL gave me this smoke smoke, the my dad loved these smoke so I smoke them when he is around to to remeber him smoke, the my wife loves the smell of this smoke smoke, the I have to try this one smoke, the I will age these smoke, the newest have to have, the 100 other different kinds of smokes.

Now maybe some of these over lap - but I have probably 100 boxes of different cigars sure i double up but the cigar I like on a spring morning at the lake with my coffee is not the same size nor brand as my big meal smoke. As such to enjoy both of these occations to the fullest I need 2 kinds of cigars.

Variety is the spice of life.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I have tons of single cigars in my humi, in fact I don't have many multiples. The best way I have found is to use an xcel spreadsheet to keep track of everything I have. Once you figure out what you like you can buy boxes of your favorites.

Even though I've been smoking for about 6 years I still keep mostly singles on hand, I plan to change that soon though. My plan is to have my big cabinet humidor full of boxes to age & my desktop humidor full of singles to smoke.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I also have quite a bit of singles. I don't think its a problem whatsoever, as its always good to try something new. If you are worried about lower quality sticks taking up too much room this can easily be solved by creating a tupperdor for such sticks. If you are worried about trying the new sticks in fear that they will ruin your biweekly smoke then what I suggest if you start off the night with a new stick, if you absolutely hate it after a little bit, toss it. Then have one of your better ones that you know you will like. I do this on occasion.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

You'll know you have too many cigars, different or not, when you don't have room to store them. Then, you start weeding out the ones you don't like, and buy boxes of the ones you do like. Here again, bumping up against a storage problem.

No, you can never have too many, or different, cigars!!

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

Blasphemy, I say. Blasphemy! Stone the cretin and WE'LL smoke 'em..... ugh, sorry. The answer is no!

Get creative. Give the ones you wouldn't give to your BOTL to your neighbors you don't like. That way your neighbor will toss it, smoke it, or give it to somebody else and HE will look cheap!

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I have 4 humidors,,,2 overflow Rubber Maids of 250 plus size and 1 coolerador so I guess my answer is a resounding NO. I love cigars and enjoy trying different ones as you might happen to find the Holy Grail of cigars in your search.

Re: Can you have too many different cigars?

I guess I was lucky. I didn't buy online at first and I have a pretty hood cigar shop with a large walk in humidor about 1/2 mile from my house. I would stop there one Fridays and buy a few singles. Smoke them over the weekend and make a note or two about them. Now I buy online what i enjoy and still stop by the local shop every couple of weeks and buy something new or look for sales. I would smoke what you have before buying more. Resist the urge. Hell you could always try to get your non puffing friends to try it buy giving them a few sticks with a cheap cutter for birthday gifts.
