Distilled Water...kind of

For a humidor can you use water that has been filtered from a "PUR" water filter rather than using distilled water?

I would think your still going to have a lot of stuff left on the water you do not want. I would stick to distilled.

Distilled water is so cheap, I don't see why you would use anything else.. what is it, about $2 per gallon, if that?

Like Warhorse said, you're still going to have crap in your water. Those PUR filters "purify" the water, not distill it. When they distill water they boil it and collect the vapor. Pure H2O.

PUR water still tastes good. Distilled water tastes like crap!

If all you want to do is recharge beads, putting them in a ziplok along with a wet sponge or paper towel and letting them absorb the humiditiy as it evaporates will accomplish the same thing.

That is what I use all the time. The Pur filter is the same used in my hiking water filter, and is so good, it removes 99+% of everything from water. It may not be distilled, but it is about as pure as you can make tap water without distilling. I've been using in in my beads for over a year, with no noticable effect or coloration.

The reason for using distilled water only is because ANY humidification device is porous in order to absorb the moisture. By not using distilled water, you will eventually clog those pores with impurities rendering the humidification device ineffective. This holds true for the moisture sensitive silica media ("beads") as well.

PLEASE stick to the distilled water, in the long run, you will be thankful you did.

Hope this helps and happy smoking!

Re: Distilled Water...kind of

It really depends on what kind of media you are using and how you are "adding" the water to the humidification device.

I use regular tap water to refill my beads.. However, I allow the tap water to evaporate from a sponge to fill the beads - I don't pour the water onto them. Since distilled water is made by collecting "pure" water vapors, my method also is adding distilled water to the beads, and the impurities remain in the sponge.

If your media requires immersion in water, or adding water to it in order to refill the media; you should ONLY use distilled water. If you can add the water via evaporation you don't even need to bother with the PUR filter.

Re: Distilled Water...kind of

I agree with everyone here. Go out and spend the dollar and change and get a gallon of distilled. It will last you a long time and you will not need to worry about it clogging up your humidification device.
