Had my first "full" bodied cigar today. Whats the hype?

I have only been smoking cigars for a few months now but have broadened my horizons rather quickly. When I first started out I enjoyed mild to medium bodied cigars such as Montecristo's. After joining this site I learned more about the vast majority of shapes, flavor profiles, brands, etc. I started to smoke and really enjoy more medium-to-full bodied cigars such as RPV 1990/92, Punch, Cohiba Siglo II, etc. So today I was in my local B&M and decided to try a La Gloria Cubana Serie R NO.5 which from what I read is a "full bodied" cigar. I just got finished smoking it and it was really good. It had a mixture of creaminess and spice that I enjoyed. However, it wasn't super powerfull or overwhelming at all, it just left more of an after taste on the palette.

So what is it reallly that makes a cigar "full-bodied"?

Re: Had my first "full" bodied cigar today. Whats the hype?

You'll know it when you smoke it. The Gloria Cubana that you speak of has had some different takes on it in that the quality has gone down somewhat. I have smoked enough of these to downgrade their "full bodied" review to a medium-full at best. I smoke mostly full bodied cigars and while Gloria Cubana is complex and full of flavors it does not give me a full bodied type of smoke.

You can do a search for what is considered "full bodied" but then you will be taking what others consider to be full bodied and tastes for them. I emplore that you search out cigars for yourself and what pleases you whether it be a mild or full bodied. Some think that only a full bodied cigar will give them the taste and appreciation for a good cigar and that is not true at all. There are some very good cigars out there that will give you some great taste and "body" that aren't found in full bodied cigars. Let YOUR taste be your guide and not advertising. Try out new cigars from mild to full bodied and keep a ledger of those that please you the most. It's all about the journey!

I would say you haven't had a full body cigar then. They aren't spicy like a medium spicy cigar, just full. My favorite full-body is La Flora Dominicana Double Ligero. This thing made me feel woopie, and I hardly ever get woopie from a cigar

Re: Had my first "full" bodied cigar today. Whats the hype?

i had a a Padilla but can't remember which one that kicked my butt. I have never gotten sick of a smoke before, but i came real close, to the point of having to hang out in the bath room.

it was a good smoke, and i enjoyed it, but it never felt over powering to me. until i stood up. i few tall glasses of ginger ale, and it passed, but it kinda of turned me off smokes for a little while.

I just had a CAO Brazillia Gol without eating anything, and wow...that was a strong cigar...not the strongest I had...the LFD DL was probably strongest but this one I really felt and was a good cigar

Yup those are very full-bodied, I love them. I agree with Gary on this one, doesn't have to be full-bodied to be tasty. There are plenty of medium-bodied cigars I enjoy on a regular basis that are just loaded with flavor. The LGC Serie R is a great smoke in my opinion, but definately not full-bodied.

If you want a great full-bodied cigar, I'd suggest trying a CAO Lx2.

Here's my short review of the LGC Serie R
Today's Haul (10pc)

Another "not considered full bodied" vote

Re: Had my first "full" bodied cigar today. Whats the hype?

Not quite full bodied.

About 7-8 years ago the Ashton VSG and La Gloria Serie R were all the rage and considered full bodied. But now both of those are considered medium. Both are great sticks but the scale is always trending towards stronger and stronger cigars. Not that that is necessarily a good thing but it's a fact.

The hype is, some people enjoy full bodied cigars, some people enjoy medium cigars, some people enjoy mild cigars, and many people enjoy cigars somewhere in between! Find what you like and enjoy them!

Next time at the B&M grab you the LFD, some others would be the 601 Green or a Camacho Triple Maduro.

try a cigar that has ligero tabacco. if you can find a ligero with some age on it. if your looking for a good full body cigar try the edge by rocky patel. im sure you can find someone on here with some extras cause from i understand they only sell them in bulk
