Saving cigars for a special time
Hey gorrilas hows everything?
I was reading another thread and someone mentioned saving cigars for a special reason, this made me remember when I was doing just that. Here is how it would go for me. I would get in a trade or someone decided to bomb me with a few smokes, and in there would be an Opus or something that I figgured was almost irraplaceable. I would set that cigar on the "top shelf" of my display humidor and view it almost as a status symbol. What did I know I was a Newbie? I had to "set up a special occasion" to break that dam of "specialties" Well I found it it was called getting together with a freind I met online. How it went was like this. I went to the airport to pickup my friend and he was quite the "cigar collector" - I thought... He handed me a smoke and said light that up, I was looking at it thinking wow this is one I never even heard of - so as I was smoking that I really enjoyed it, I mean wow I love this one - I asked how can I get some more of these he giggled and said you can't becasue they only made so many and that was ___ years ago. THe expereience certainly gave me a thrill and I would have never smoked that cigar it would have sat idol in my display untill ????who knows when. I was more thinking if I had 2 I would try one... So I started to try these cherrished smokes that were rare and or hard to find, and you know what? I found that after I tried them they where not only easier to find I also found the ones I did or didn't like. I met several great people through the online bbs world who all had emense knowledge of cigars and I learned much, from some of the "FOG's" here on CS I have learned the most about proticol and truly fine smokes. All this experience that I learend from these guys is broken down into Enjoy it. Now If I am searching for "those great gars" I tend to try and get 2 for a different reason, I like to sit with a buddy and enjoy a good gar. It makes the expereince far better. So If you are saving particular cigars, post it here and let me know why you think its a good idea to save them. Someone may want to make sure you have a second one to "nudge you" into trying one. hbooker |

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
I will save certain cigars for periods of time but eventually will find the right time and place to smoke them... it all depends on my mood and the occassion.
The only cigars that currently in one of my humidors that are "sacred" are 4 8-5-8 Sun Growns. They have been there about 4 years and they don't make them anymore. I will eventually smoke them (at least 3 of them) but again I am holding them for the right occassion... How do I know it's the right occassion?... Well it's sort of like ****... you know it when you see it...

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
I have a Partagas Church. from the '05 Special dinner they hold annually. Have no idea when I'd have an occassion special enough to smoke that?!
HOWEVER, what if I get hit by a bus tomorrow, and as I lay on the street as the paramedics are en route, wondering "I wonder what that stick would have tasted like?" My wife would give all my sticks to whomever would take them-and not necessarily apopreciate them... Food for thought. ![]() |

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
I find myself doin the same thing, I keep trying to get rid of these other smokes in the humidor to avoid smoking some of the real nice one cause it never feels like the right time. Though this weekend I wanted to celebrate getting a pay raise so I lit up a smoke from the 70s I recently bought off somebody.
I think this weekend I will make a point of finally trying an opus x, as I have two of them sitting at home that I haven't brought myself to smoke. |

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
I almost never save cigars for special occassions. Recently, I was saving 2 smokes, a Casa Fuente and an Anejo 55 from father's day last year. I just smoked them when my son graduated this past week. When my daughter gets in high school, I'll pick out 2 more to save for when she graduates, but that is some time away and I'll try alot of smokes before I pick them out to hold on to.
Other than that, anytime I can get together with a fellow cigar smoker is a special enough occassion to smoke something great. Ron

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
As being a newbie I will have to remember the getting hit by a bus deal. The down side for me is noone would get the good ones I would have been saving, cause my wife would just throw them away. She doesnt think like I do. You only live life once and I know I will have those special few that I'll be saving and hopefully I get to smoke them with a buddy befoe it's to late.

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
I'll save the festive sized cigars like A's, Fundadores, and Lanceros for special occasions, while virtually anything else is as my mood dictates. It's good to have some stuff in one's humidor that's "reserved", if you will, to make those smokes a "moment in time".
I prefer to reserve whole boxes than just one/two cigars, as I would want to enough to cover everybody that is sharing this "moment in time" with me.

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
I'll smoke any cigar that I have whenever I have enough time to enjoy it. For me, the appreciation of fine cigars has less to do with the posession and more to do with the consumption. Any time available is time enough for my best smoke.

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
I'm guilty of saving smokes for special occasions. Mostly of Cuban origin simply because I do not have many in my collection and have yet to find one that I can say has been my all time favorite and made me make a purchase(To my home in Canada that is
) Obviosly I am not well versed in Cuban smokes and have not had too many. I do not have too many in my possesion so I tend to cherish them and seem to not want to waste smoking them just for the hell of it. This is funny because when it comes to most things I usually use the whole "What if I get hit by a bus tomorrow" excuse. I guess it's just that these smokes are just not as accessible as running down to the local B&M and picking up more. I know that if I or any of my buddies ever get to Vegas in the near future I will pick up a bunch of Casa Fuentes and these too will hold a special spot in my humidor. I really should change this habit but like I said it's been tough, and I too have these special smokes layed out on my top shelf of my humi. I did break that trend tonight and smoked an awesome Hoyo gifted to me from Opusxox.(I still owe you for that one and now that I'm back on my feet from being layed off the last couple months so Look out! ) Tonight was no special occasion just a BBQ with some family and the smoke was awesome! So I guess until I have a serious collection of smokes like Crazyfool and DaKlugs I will be picky of when I smoke my higher end smokes, and save my LFDs and CAOs for everyday. If that bus does come tomorrow and strikes me down, I'm sure the wife will leave a few sticks in the box for me to take in my dirt hole.![]() |

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
One of the reasons I brought this up was to point out how I changed over the years. Interacting with folks from the board and making friends had a definitive effect and it was a positive one.
The guy who I called My Cigar Guru (the one who taught me much) was a fine gentleman who would ussualy prefice handing you a smoke with a statement like "I hope you dont mind all I have are these old things here" He said cigars are for smoking and there is always more..... hbooker |

Save cigars ? Yes !
I think we all do it. I do it. I have some rare ones that I am smoking slowly because they are hard to get. But like they say what the F**k ! They were made to be smoked. So before I die and someone else enjoys them. I smoke them.

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
This is a great thread! I save cigars for special occasions, but then I realized that every night I get to smoke is a special occasion, so no sense putting stuff off, I smoke the nicer things I've got, RPV1990s, Toranos, etc.. But my really nice stuff, my few Cubans, PAM 64s, my single PAM26, etc, they go on the top shelf of my glasstop, and I stare at them. I'm trying to get around that. I've got a Siglo VI that I'm thinking of saving until I graduate college, even though that's looking to be about 5 years away. I almost smoked it tonight for my bday, but it rained, so no smoke for me at all. I've got a 5er of Boli PCs I haven't touched. Usually, I'm like you. If I have one really nice smoke, I'm afraid to smoke it, for fear that I'll really like it, but be unable to replace it, for financial reasons, or just an inability to find more.
*Bump*!!

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
I really have to say that is one of the hardest discutions that come up. When to smoke and when not too. I live in Cal. So you can't smoke in a lot of places any more. I have a couple of smokes that I am saveing. I got most of them from a friend. Most of them you can't get anymore. I am a newbie, so I find it hard to find that time to sit down and actually enjoy it, because I will be damned if I waste one of these babies. I would feel awful.

Re: Saving cigars for a special time
Yes, I have A SIGLO VI put away until my wife is 5 years cancer free ( she is just undergoing her chemo now ). I also save my Boli PC's as a Sunday cigar, but everything else goes on the feel of the day.
