My review of a Gurkha
This is my first Gurkha. I am still trying to get to all the brands. I dont know which one this was, buts the band is just that big red labeled one with no i.d. on it except for gurkha names and the picture. This was I think a churchill sized but maybee a little bigger.
This was 4 months in a humi at 67. First off yout can feel its a quality cigar. I lit it up and it was a tough light. Had to torch a long time, and then some retorchings to get everything burning. Once going it burned fine, but the draw was extremely loose. Real loose. But after a fifth of the way down the draw became perfect. The cigar went out after half way, and I had to do one touchup. I dont know quite what to say about the cigar. You can tell the quality of the tobacco, but too much like a cigarrette. For the first two thirds of the hour and fifteen smoke, you had a slight cedar, but the main flavor was what I would call if you ever drilled a hole into a piece of 2x4 stud or piece of wood. It is that wood burnt smell. If you like that kind of taste in your cigar this would be one to look at. The last third, the predominant taste became cedar, but nothing special that I cant find in a good dollar bargain cigar from thompsons or some other place. This is a quality cigar, but not one that I would purchase to lay down. I have some other cigars of this brand that have been resting for an equal amount of time, and will be going through them in the weeks to come. I have confidence I will find some I like, as you can tell the care with which the cigar was made and the quality of the tobacco. This one just wasnt to my taste. This was a mild cigar nicotene wise, but I would say a medium to full flavored. I would smoke one if offered, but wouldnt buy. Much regards Jerry |

Re: My review of a Gurkha
I'm gonna guess the Class Regent, I'm pretty sure that one has a red band with no extra writing.
Thanks for the review Jerry!

Nice review, Jerry. Too bad they get such a bad rep on most forums. If most of them didn't suck so bad, they might have a better following

Re: My review of a Gurkha
I tend to enjoy the Titan, Beast, Centurian and Regent but anything else, it's campfire tobacco as far as I'm concerned. They tend not to give you a blast of anything as far as "punch" or nicotine but sometimes you just want change. Then you want something else right after,,lol.

Re: My review of a Gurkha
I have smoked 2 Gurkhas and actually snubbed both about halfway down, I dont think Ill ever buy another one but at times I feel like I should. Some people love them and some people hate them and they have so many different lines i feel like I might just need to find a line that fits my tastes better.

Re: My review of a Gurkha
Whenever I see value samplers being toss around, especially online, they seem to be heavily stocked with Gurkha smokes. They do have an interesting packaging line and come in an assortment of interesting boxes. However, I don't buy cigars that have pretty boxes and cigar companies seem desperate to give these away. In the shop I buy from he has the Avengers and the shags, and I haven't seen more than one get sold in months. I've heard nothing but poor reviews on this product. My only question is this: are the Man O' Wars a Gurkha product? For some reason I thought they were.

Re: My review of a Gurkha
Yeah Jerry, I purchased some Gurka Castle Halls about three months ago, tried one after about three weeks rest, but only could smoke about half of it...however, around about a week ago I tried another one (approx 3 months rest at that time), and I was rather impressed (surprisingly). Maybe it was a fluke, but I will try another soon and review it here. I'm thinking they just needed to sleep awile....

Re: My review of a Gurkha
I've smoked a bunch of various Gurkhas. I really like the Centurian and Royal Brigade perfectos, if you can get them cheap enough, but the Class Regent toro is one of my favorite cigars made by anyone. The Nepalese Warrior is the same thing with a Cameroon wrapper. I've only smoked a couple of these, so the jury's still out. Apparently the Torano folks are involved, but I'm not really clear on whether they actually make them, or just helped create them.
Even as much a fan of Gurkha as I am, most of them are overpriced. Never pay regular price for them. They're pretty easy to pick up in the $3-5 range, and they're worth that, to me at least. Over $12 apiece for those Centurians? I'll have to get back to you on that, OK?
