Re: Cigar on the plane

On my trip to the Philippines a month of so ago, I placed my sticks in an empty cigar box with a humistick in my checked baggage. I also check my cigar cutter and two butane lighters.

Both leaving and coming back my bags were searched (got the little notice tag in my luggage). My sticks were all safe. No problems with my cutters. The butane lighters were not confiscated but were emptied and each placed in an individual red plastic baggy.

Good thread HCI. I was probably gonna ask the same question in a couple month when I return from deplyment. For the simple fact that I really dont want to leave my smokes in a conex which will take up to 3 months before it gets back to the states. Sending them home is out of the question for my wife doesnt know my new hoby yet

2 words: Travel Humidor - and carry it on.

DO NOT let the machines toss your smokes around. The condition our bags have come back to us is shameful. We bought new luggage and used it going to Vegas. After we landed and got our bags, they looked like we'd had them for 5 years.

Note: Lighters can and will get "taken" at the airport. I think it depends on how gung-ho the checker is with that sort of thing. I've had them go through on the initial carry-on check and then on return, had them taken. You're better off getting matches when you land.

If the lighter is an issue, this may be of interest.

I have seen that Zippos with a Blazer insert are also acceptable if stowed in this case. It will be the way I go to Florida in a month. I couldn't imagine trying to light a stogie a a windy beach with matches or a Bic.

For sure, keep your sticks with you!

Re: Cigar on the plane

I travel about 3 times a week via plane and unless you are willing to roll the dice on lost luggage or ripped open bags, keep them with you. Go spend $50 on a hard sided Cigar Case. Xikar has a nice leather one that holds 3 sticks and will not take that much room in your briefcase and will always keep your cigars "healthy" when you travel. If you like to gift cigars to friends like I do then you will need a good travel humidor that hold 6 - 10 cigars. You could go cheap and get one for $30 or up to $400. The issues that you will have with a cheap in is that due to the pressure at 30,000 feet it will seal the crap out of it. When I had a cheap plastic one I had to pry it open with a dime (the coin) every time I landed.

After logging about 50,000 miles on planes this year a good travel cigar case to carry on is my best friend on the road.

Re: Cigar on the plane

Get an 10 or 15 ct Otter Box or something similar and keep it in your Carry on. I had mine double Checked by the TSA at 2 different check points for some odd reason but it'll keep your Cigar's in tip top shape and ready to smoke.

Also, like kids, never let them play in traffic and always make them eat their vegetables.
