Cigar on the plane

Hi, everyone,
I would be out of the country this friday, I want to bring some cigar with me for the trip. Where should I put it, should I carry it with me or can I leave it in luggage? Will the low temp as in the checked in luggage demage the cigars? thanks

Sean

btw, as a newbie, I am really glad I found this place. I truely enjoy the reading/learning here. All of you saved me lots of money from the bad stuff, in the same time, I filled my 100 humidor in no time

Re: Cigar on the plane

Whenever possible, I carryon all my baggage, cigars included. Never had trouble with the smokes themselves, but don't bring lighters or cutters obviously. As for temps in the cargo hold...it shouldn't be a problem if you check your stogies. I'd be more worried about theft or damage from rough handling.

Cigars get priority in my carryon, along with my ipod and bose headphones. These are all things that I don't want to let out of my control.

I just flew from San Antonio to Pittsburgh. I put the cutter and the matches in my stowed luggage and the cigars were in my carry on

Re: Cigar on the plane

Sigh.... I'm going to be traveling soon myself and have a travel case. I'm the opposite of most people in that I HATE carrying on luggage. My bulging bag with books, magazines, laptop etc. etc. etc. I was plannig on burying mine in the case in the center of my luggage. Kind of like the bubble wrap when shipping them only my clothes would be the bubble wrap. All things considered if you carry them on it may be ideal, but for me I think baggage would be better. I also look at the handling of carry on which is a back pack usually. That thing gets jostled near constantly. I know that stow away luggage get jostled but I wiuld think it would not be as much as a carry on bag. Just my

Re: Cigar on the plane

Actually according to the TSA website you are allowed to carry on cigar cutters - that is in carry on or checked backage. http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=177

That being said, my pops-in-law swears he just had a cigar punch type cutter taken from his checked backage (I think he may have lost it!).

I just carried on some of those lever type wine corkscrews, and was prepared for them to take them, but they made it o.k. I had a copy of the prohibited items list with me just in case I had to argue. Should have brought a cheapo cutter along just to see if they know their own rules.

Have you ever seen the machine that handles your luggage? My buddy works for Northwest and he showed me the conveyors that your luggage travels on. To move it from belt to belt, there is a machine that is basically like a baseball bat, that swings at about 65mph to push your bag.

Re: Cigar on the plane

I have travelled 3 times this year on airplanes and always carried my cutters with no problem at all. Last time I carried 3 of them. Not even an extra look from the security. You shouldn't have a problem. Also, all 3 times I carried matches in the carry on, without problem.

Re: Cigar on the plane

You are allowed cigar cutters in carry on and on person, the same with up to four packs of "BOOK" Matches. I travel a couple of times a year, and while I do carry some in my carry on, well I like to take a mess of cigars with me. When I make my annual tip to Key West I usually take at least 30 smokes for the week since cigars are over priced in that tourist town. I have a real good travel humidor that I bury in the middle of my luggage. Also, I learned this year that just because something is "Duty Free" doesn't mean you will dave mone. I went to St Croix in the USVI and well, I could of bought a box of Shorty Story's for $165.00 and a box of AVO XO Preludios for $175.00 I can buy the same here in the states for 109.00 and 122.00 respectively.

Holy flircking schmit! Don't have to warn me twice. I had no idea. Ignorance is bliss and you my friend may have just avoided a catastrophe.

Thanks.

Re: Cigar on the plane

It's already been said but you can definitely carry one cigar cutters and matches. They claim you are not allowed to carry butane lighters, even in checked baggage, but I carry my cheapo lighters in my checked baggage and have never had a problem. Definitely carry your cigars with you.

Re: Cigar on the plane

Even though they say it's ok to carry on butane lighters that have been emptied of butane. I'm not taking any risk with my nice lighters. As for the cigars, get a hard shell travel humidor and carry those puppies with you. I for one don't carry many cigars with me because I like to visit local B&M's and check out the atmosphere.

In my otter box and in my carry on they go...

You need to watch these babies. Socks can be replaced but good cigars can not sometimes.

Just carry some matches or a bic in case they get nabbed by security. You can always replace those when you land.

Thanks.

I know what you're saying. I really didn't believe him about the force of the "pushers", but we all went to Las Vegas 2 weeks ago, and while we were waiting at the airport, he got me a visitors pass to go "behind the scenes". While we were down there, we were able to electronically watch as our bags were loaded onto the plane. That's when he showed me the "pushers". If you ever wonder how suitcases are damaged after little use, its not because they are tossed around by employees, its by the machines.
