Re: The official Make Fun of Thompson's Cigars thread

Knowing that all cigar catalogs (and on-line descriptions, for that matter) are written with more enthusiam than truth, I usually disregard the descriptions, and look at price. That being said, I have not bitten on any of Thompson's house brand cigars. I have purchased numerous name-brands from them, and have three (four counting Ninja's) humis from them. I usually only buy cigar specials that include freebies, and have found more than one deal to-good-to-pass in the past. And, for some reason, they have missed me, or I have slid between the CMOS cracks somehow. No e-mails, no phone calls, no follow-up harrassment from them in the two years we have been dealing with Thompson!!

I kinda figure, looking at most of the cigar catalogs out there today, the copy writers/ad agencies that assist or totally write the descriptions are a bunch of recent college marketing grads that have, at best, only covertly smokes a few gas station purchased cigars (the type with those neat little plastic tips) Caulk up the poor grammer and spelling to the "dumbing-down" of today's youth within the public school system. (but luckily, no student is "left behind"!!!)

For the longest time, when I would get a Thompson's catalog it would go straight into the trash. Don't know why but last week I flipped through one that had missed the trash. I was amused by the terrible errors throughout the catalog; particularly the product inaccuracies.

Whether you are brimming with cigar cigar knowledge and spot the errors right away, or a cigar neophyte wanting to expand your knowledge; post in this thread when something Thompson's says about a cigar is wrong..
(yes I am bored and avoiding work today)

-Matt-
My first real purchase was from Thompsons. A humidor and 75 cigars. The humidor was advertised as having a tray and adjustable dividers. Well the tray had a divider that was glued into place but there were no other dividers. The cigars were dry and horrible tasting (what did I know). So I called Thompsons regarding the Humi. After a dozen calls and as many emails I finally got a "supervisor" on the phone. I complained about the humi not having dividers. They said of course it doe not have dividers. I called their attention to the catalog that I purchased from and said they had better send the dividers. They had no explanation for the catalog description and had no dividers to send.

I demanded a refund and wanted to return the whole lot. They wanted me to pay shipping and a restock fee and only wanted to pay a prorated amount for the smoked cigars (I had smoked 1 or 2 of each of three different cigars). I calmly explained to them that defending a civil action for mail fraud, and false advertising would cost much more than the cost of shipping and refunding my money without a restock fee.

I think then they realized what profession I was in and agreed to do as I asked. I have never bought another thing from them.

For some reason I still get catalogs . . . HEY THOMPSONS

EDIT: I also noticed that the next catalog I received had a new version of the description of the humi. Hmmmmmmmm

I must of gottren the next catalog, because my first purchase was a humidor and 75 cigars for this unbelievably low price, what was I thinking. Anyway, got everything smoked the cigars, hell, I was a newbie and what did I know I had up until then ony smoked what someone gave me or the occasional stale Macanudo I got from the local newstand. My next purchase, well I forget what it was, it was a bundle of some sort, but what I received was this five pack sampler. I called customer service and informed them of their shipping mistake, they told me they would have to charge me to ship the correct ones, and when they received the wrong ones then they will re-imburse me oh and I had to pay shipping. Well, I got a little short and informed them they will reimburse me and I will not be buying anything again.

Now, what was almost laughable, I get a phone call the next day from some other bozo at Thompson's trying to get me to join their cigar club. That poor slob got an earful. A "manager" called me back and apoligised profusely, i informed him that the damage was done. go away, do not call and do not email. I still get the catalogs, I trash them immediately.

I still get the catalogues and look through them, but thats all. I look for their ridiculous prices so I can jeer at them.

I laugh when Thompson's says, "Romeo y Julieta, Rare as rare can be..."
Rare, my a**, RyJs are everywhere!

Or when they try to play up candela wrapper "... only 1% of 1% (or something like that) of cigar leaf is candela, very rare" - yeah sure, because nobody wants to buy candela!

Re: The official Make Fun of Thompson's Cigars thread

I saw they had a box of Partagas 150's advertised for 720.00. If I were able, I could prolly get a couple of boxes of genuine cuban cigars for that amount.
Whoever sets their prices, may be smoking something other than cigars.

Except that these particular cigars legitimately sell individually for $40-$60 a stick, depending on size. That makes a 25 count box average around $1250 if purchased individually. Plus, that particular cigar is not as readily available as most current cigars. The ONE (size AA - basically a 7x54 size) I have purchased cost me around $50 from a different supplier, who offered them in three-packs for $135 ($45 each), over a year ago.

I agree that for the price of a box of these, you could buy three boxes of nice cubans (but not the high end stuff!). That's why I only own a single of the stick!! I have not smoked my 150 yet, figure for $50, it will wait for a special ocassion, and I will hope it was worth the price and wait!!

I don't think you can get these cheaper anywhere else. It's a very high-end smoke.

They also had two of the Opus X 22 boxes at MSRP ($750) which sold very fast.
