Coolerdors

As most people like to see pictures... well here's a contribution of my coolerdor.

I have gone overboard with the spanish cedar. What would you expect from a cigar loving, anal retentive computer geek, hobbyist woodworker?

The unfortunate part of the whole project was that the rude people at Coleman designed their device to hold liquids and keep things cold, thus the cooler tapers in from the top to the bottom and there are ridges and valleys to deal with. It's not apparent from the picture but the cedar liner fits in tightly as best as possible and also tapers from front to back.

IMHO every coolerdor must have a remote temp/hygrometer which send the readings to a remote base station. It keeps me from obsessively opening the coolerdor’s door unnecessarily. Oh but that delicious smell of spanish cedar and cigars……

Many of the BOTL’s have inspired me with your cabinet humidor projects that I'm going to have to tackle that project as soon as I work down my honey do list.

Thumbs up Re: Coolerdors

wow man that looks good. if you want you can sent it to me and i'll "monitor" the humidity/temp for you. that way you wont have to worry about opening it too much. looks good. i like the shelf idea instead of just dropping them in. thumbs up.

Re: Coolerdors

Real nice, I just bought myself a nice big cooler and some spanish cedar with the thoughts of accomplishing the same thing. Looks great.

Re: Coolerdors

Looks nice. Did the same thing to my coolerdor a few years back. The thing was rock solid when it came to the humidity, but I decided to trade it for a few smokes when I picked up a cabinet almost two years ago.

Re: Coolerdors

Really nice work there! Excellent craftsmanship!

If only my apartment wasn't always mid-70s I would do that same exact thing.

Re: Coolerdors

onlyonerm & mhillsing23,

Though I am far from an expert, but I would be glad to help you guys in any way, when you get to building your own. Like calistogey stated, my coolerdor is rock solid in temp and humidity. Much more so than either of my desktop type humidors.

Sort-of a shame that the best humidor has the least visual appeal.

Yep - coolerdors are great !
I got a humidor & a cabinet, but I still keep my coolerdor for long-term storage, yard 'gars, etc.

You don't have to line your coolerdor with cedar. I find that my cigar boxes give the coolerdor enough cedar. When I finish a box, I may take the cedar insert panel and/or spacers & throw them into the cooler for additional cedar.

I probably spent one whole saturday. The bulk of my time was spent trying to figure out how to handle the tapered inside and milling the spanish cedar. I bought boards that were slightly thicker than 3/4 inch and resawed & planed them down. You can buy the cedar already sized and save that step.

Also because I wanted my coolerdor to stand upright I had to figure out a stand on the back bottom to keep it stable.

Like others have said you don't need to put all that cedar in for it to be effective.

Re: Coolerdors

Looks great! I have a few questions. Did you put a finish on your cedar? I was told at Davidoff's in LV that unfinished wood will suck up the moisture. If you did seal it-what did you use?

What is the black box on the second shelf with the strap going outside?

What is the brand/price of the humidity reader?

If they can make weather stations with 2 or 3 remotes why can't they make a remote for temp/humidity so you don't have to open the door all the time?

Maybe a hole cut in the door of the cooler with plexiglass would solve the problem, though.

Thanks

Dont have to seal the Ceder. The ceder will help maintain the humidity, plus it smells dang fine when you open the door.

As for the other ?'s, maybe someone else has the answers that I dont. (yet!)
