New Member. Need a humidor!

Greetings. I am a long time cigar smoker, but new to the forum. I am getting to the point where I need a humidor and I would like to get everyones opinion on the better deals on the market today. I would like a humidor that holds 100+ cigars and is easy on the eyes, a glass top is a plus. I would like to keep it under $150 if possible. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I look forward to being a member of this great community!

Welcome to CS!

CLICK HERE - Mark has some nice humidors that fit your specs. He is also a member here on CS.

One note would be to always buy a bigger humidor than you think you need. Most humidors don't really hold what they say they will - unless you are filling them with short smokes.

Next thing to do is to read up on the sticky notes for the humidification beads aka - vipers beads.

Good luck with it -

Ron

Well, he is not stupid, but I am with him on this one. If you buy a humi that is too small, you will be back looking before you can refill your torch.

Check out cheaphumidors.com. They have a wide selection of glass tops that are very nice. I have a 150 count that is beautiful. It most likely won't hold 150, but it does what I need for now. For $15 extra they can engrave in the glass too.

Re: New Member. Need a humidor!

Guess it depends if 150 count will really do the trick for you. As a newbie who bought a 50 count Humi and shortly after ended up dragging our old ice chest. Out grew it quickly and bumped up to a bigger one, it's close to being full already. I was warned but didn't listen.

I recently got a Bally from neptunecigar, that has been working pretty well. I just placed a digital hygrometer on the top shelf and have no problems reading the temp and humidity without opening the lid. You might be able to get it cheaper somewhere else, however, they had free shipping which saved me 20 bucks (I bought some other accessories and some cigars as well). Tampahumidor has one that looks similar, although the hinge might be a little different.

cheaphumidors.com and premiumhumidors.com had some models as well, I believe they were called the Artisan.

Re: New Member. Need a humidor!

Go ahead and get you a nice 100 to 150 count. I would strongly consider the link provided to the member selling some. He is a stand-up guy, with good positive trade ratings!

Then, down the road, you will have the nice desk top for your "current" smoking stock, and you can invest $30-40 on a cooler down the road for your long term storage needs (boxes and boxes and boxes!)

Don't listen to the pikers that say "forgo the humi, get a cooler". Get them both, that's the true male way to do things (you should give your best Tim Allen "man grunt" at this point).

Re: New Member. Need a humidor!

Wayne, just sent a PM, but here's something to think about while making your decision.

I'm with SvilleKid on this. I'd like to take a minute to respectfully disagree with my fellow BOTL's who believe that huge humidors are necessary.

A humidor is a convenient and aesthetic display PRESENTATION BOX used to "merchandise" a representative assortment of your cigars. Because it's out in the open, and residing with our other furniture, we invest more money to buy something aesthetically pleasing.

But a box is just a box. Why spend more money on fancy storage when you don't have to, when cheap large volume storage in the form of a coolerdor will do?

Case in point, a $600 Reed and Barton Biltmore humidor which stores 100 cigars means that this storage method equates to $6 per cigar. Contrast that with a $60 coolerdor that will store 600 cigars or more, translating to $.10 cents per cigar.

We can only smoke one cigar at a time, more or less. So, my belief is that the way to go is to store your INVENTORY in "backstock" in a coolerdor (just like they do in a retail store), moving only a handful of representative smokes to the expensive humidor for ease of access.

Spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for multiple humidors is overkill, IMO. And, if you buy only ONE humidor, you can afford to concentrate more of your budget into one REALLY NICE one, rather than three or four mediocre ones, or expending money and taking losses as you 'trade up' to larger sizes. Also, a huge humidor becomes a problem in terms of where to place it in your home.

I have two humidors, an R&B Biltmore for the smokes I collect on my own, and a Brebbia (Savinelli) that I use to rest the 'gars I've received as gifts or trades. Both serve me well, and I don't see how a larger single humidor would make sense. Everything else is in a 'Rubbermaidador' in my closet, and when I start getting low on supply, I just replenish as needed.

Anyway, that's my two cents by way of a strategy.

Re: New Member. Need a humidor!

I understand hammerhead's point. He's exactly right that a box is a box. My only problem with a coolerdor is that I get confused which one has smokes and which one has the beer.

I have two humidors. One that holds 300 and one that holds 20. The little 20 guy sits on my desk for easy access to my everyday smokes. My bigger humi serves as long term storage. I'm almost at the point of doing the coolerdor thing for long term storage of unopenend boxes. Anyway, my setup seems to work for me. My 300 humidor sits in my living room and makes for a nice conversation piece and gives my guests access to my premium sticks while my little desktop does the job when I'm sitting at my computer in my boxers. I guess it all comes down to what works best for you. If you want presentation go with a fancy box...if you want storage capacity then the coolerdor is the definite way to go.

Re: New Member. Need a humidor!

I have a Mastro de Paja, Italian made humidor for sale. It's in perfect condition and about 10 years old. Has a Royal Crown humidification element in it, and I want $175.00 for the humidor. Within your original price range...

For those whom are unfamiliar with Mastro de Paja, they are famous for pipes and misc. smoking stuff. Kind of like an Italian Dunhill or something....

Re: New Member. Need a humidor!

I bought a Vicksburg from:
http://www.bargainhumidors.com/bh/
It is working out great. I can store up to 10 boxes in the bottom and my singles up top. Beveled glass top and for $80 more you can add a Oasis to it.
