Sorry to hear you cigar budget just got lowered but it's for a good cause.

I'm lucky because my wife is a school teacher (english) so she helps my son if he needs it.

Mike:
I don't know whether this reading camp will help him; it probably will but, what he can do to improve and strengthen his reading, is to read (especially during the summer months) the things he likes to read. Because reading is a skill, one gets better at it by doing it on a regular basis. Older generations of kids had comic books and sport magazines, nowadays kids have distractions in the form of video games etc.; quiet activities like reading on rainy days take a back seat to video games.
Whenever you see him reading, ask him what it is about; that will show if he is retaining what he is reading.

With a daughter starting 1st grade and a wife who's back in college for her 2nd degree, I know how it feels. Just been stocking up on some PC's/TPC's, but still manage to gift a few sticks out every once in a while.

I promise he would enjoy reading Playboy! I did when I was his age, and the articles are great!

Re: Just venting. Gotta get this off my chest.

It might have something to do with FL Public schools being ranked #48 among the states, or the fact that in most FL schools more kids speak and read spanish than english... I dont know but just maybe this has contributed? I dont mean to offend anybody, but if kids were forced to learn english before entering into the same classrooms as english speaking kids it would greatly benifit the school systems and the kids going through them. Most English classes in Florida are just that, english classes where they try to teach the kids to understand english. Thats the wrong answer.

Just my two cents.

Re: Just venting. Gotta get this off my chest.

I just went through it with my daughter !

196 hours of tutoring at $55.00 an hour. The total almost cost me $10,000.00
last summer. Yes that is a lot of cigars.

But its education. If you dont take care of it now. It will be worse later.

In the long run it was all worth it. You will see it will PAY off for you as well.

Oh yes, it all worked out. She is doing math and reading at her own level and feeling more confident now as well.

Anything for you baby!

I think in the end you'll see that it was more than worth it. Self confidence can hinder or aid a person and with children it is 2x when they feel they're behind everyone else for one reason or another.

Children are a big investment. And this has positive written all over it. Now go outside, relax and smoke that Black & Mild.

Expensive, but the right thing to do Mike. There will always be more cigars.

thanks that's encouraging to hear. As a dad it's good as a cigar lover it sucks. But hey I'll take son's education over cigars anyday. At least for the first year.

now you are thinking man! Cut out the pics of Vida, then make him read an article that exercises his brain. Next, make him write an essay both supporting and defending a view from the article! Once he's done, give him the pics of Vida (and maybe a jar of vaseline )!

Re: Just venting. Gotta get this off my chest.

It's worth the money. When I was in High School, my mom put me in Sylvan Learning Center to boost my math grades up. Frickin' expensive, but it's well worth it since now I'm in college and am going into my third semester of Calculus.
