Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"

I use to save certain cigars for a special occasions, but now my special occasion is just about every weekend. If I came across a forbidden X or something similar I would probably age it a certain amount of time and smoke it when I feel its ready to get the most out of it.

The special occasion is smoking the cigar.

Hehe. I don't set any date because I want to be in the "mood" to smoke, ie: a relaxed state of mind, not a "I have to smoke this to celebrate."

With that being said, I have cheaper cigars, and more expensive cigars.. and I tend to lean a lot more on my cheaper ones for a normal relaxed evening, and have to really be in the mood to smoke a premium cigar.

I think it's more on the individual than anything.

A good friend of mine (Crucial_Fiction here) bombed me today with an Opus X Forbidden. I should have never started researching this cigar because now I'm I'm afraid to smoke it. I was considering saving it for my graduation from grad school either with my masters or PhD.

You should definitely save that particular stick for after you've had a good dinner.

I find myself saving my better smokes for a special occasion, but my definition of "special occasion" seems to be loosening up a lot: being indoors, in a place where young women, wearing tank tops that don't quite reach the tops of their rather short skirts, repeatedly ask me if I'm "doing OK?" and do I "want another De Koninck?" now officially qualifies.

With a 6yr old, a backyard, a pond and two big dogs, to have enough time to smoke anything longer than a PC would be a special occassion for me.

You are alive in this day an age that can be a very special occasion.

You know I am think, that smoking a Special cigar would be the occasion itself. You have something really fine, well find a nice comfortable place to relax, have a cocktail if you wsh and light up. When i have something good, that I want to pay real close attention to and enjoy, I will get a glass of rum, sit in my recliner, turn on the TV and just enjoy the cigar. Or sit outside and look at the stars. The cigar itself will make the occasion.

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"

Man although this topic has been posted a few times, I have to say that I can relate 100% to the feelings you share about desiring to save "special smokes" for that special time.
When I was new I too fell inot that trap and became a "collector" of sorts. I would collect all the great cigars I would come accross hording them away for that special time.

I found that awaiting the special time was keeping me in a state of constant limbo. Sure I enjoyed my cigars on a regular basis but I only visited my special ones and let them know soon soon the time shall come.
New years eve, was one of those times. I fired up a smoke from that shelf and thought WOW that was good..
Then I started meeting up with people from the boards face to face, I made trips to Herfs or events like the Big SMoke, as this change started I realized that everytime I got together with a peron I met on the cigar boards this was that sepcial time.
It's like this:
A great cigar is a nice thing, a great cigar when you share the experience with another person become a GREAT event.

So, after a few good years I can whole heartedly appreciate Bruces statement.

My advice?
If your holding onto something you have never tried, you should try it you dont know what your truly missing out on. If your worried about getting more? remember there will aways be more cigars.

This is some great advice!!! Remember, a cigar is just a cigar and while it's sitting in your humi your not enjoying it. Don't get me wrong, I've got a few special smokes stashed away. But they aren't expensive nor are most of them even aged more than a year or two. What makes them special are the great people that gave them to me.

I"ve found that I don't need a special occasion to enjoy a special cigar, I just need the time.

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"

I have found that in the short time I have been enjoying cigars, the most special occasions have been each time I get to share a good smoke with my best buddies winding down after a long day. There is nothing that makes me more happy than sharing a new stick or two that I found and seeing their faces light up (literally) with enjoyment. All my "Best" sticks have been in the company of friends, sharing a laugh in the parking lot at work!

My thought is this, for me, honestly, as hokey as this is going to sound, every day I wake up, and get to thank the Lord that I'm alive another day, is plenty of reason to smoke a "good" cigar..

amen brother,

to say whether or not to age cigars is a personal choice. if there's a special occasion comin' up and you'd like to save a special 'gar for it then by all means, do it. the only thing that really makes that cigar special is what you make of it.

i've got a box of siglo IV's that i bought the day that my wife and i found out that we were having our second child, and i plan on passin' em out the day she/he is born. that ain't gonna be more than 9 months of agin', but guess what...that's probably gonna be the best smoke i've ever had...

you've really gotta put things in perspective. if you want to save a special smoke for a special occasion then do it. there is noone in the world that's gonna fault ya for it.
