Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"

Special occasion for me has been refined a bit in the last year. If I am herfing with friends, or I am just really relaxed or if the conditions are perfect I pull out a "special occasion" cigar.. If it is windy, or I am short on time or if I am smoking alone I will probibly hold off. For me 4th of July week is one big special occasion.. I smoke more cigars that week than I do normally in a months time.

A good friend of mine (Crucial_Fiction here) bombed me today with an Opus X Forbidden. I should have never started researching this cigar because now I'm I'm afraid to smoke it. I was considering saving it for my graduation from grad school either with my masters or PhD.

I know, I know do what makes you happy. But I was talking about this with the g/f and she said "save it" which is what got me thinking about why "saving it" is so looked down upon. Or maybe that's just my misinterpretation of what I've seen.
I'm reminded of an off-color joke about a guy who was caught masturbating by his clergyman who told him to "save it until you're married."

Years later, the clergyman was officiating at the guy's marriage. Right after the ring part, the guy leans over to the clergyman and whispers in his ear, "I've got 2 barrels of it in my basement. Now, what?"

I think its personal preference whether you smoke immediately or save but in my experience, deciding to save can lead to special stogie hoarding whereby you never smoke any of your 'best'cigars for fear of that special occasion being just over the horizon.

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"

I've been smoking cigars for some time, but I've never put any down to age...and by aging, I mean more than one year. So, since the beginning of '06I've spent serious coin aquiring some great cigars and putting them away, not to be smoked till at least Memorial Day 2007. I have some put away that I've never even tried yet, like the Miami 8/11 and the La Aurora Cien Anos. Now I'm irked that I can't have my cigars and smoke them too, so what I'm going to have to do, when the bank account permits, is get a few examples of each untried cigar, which I will burn posthaste.
