I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
Is frowned upon. Is this the case and if so, why?
A good friend of mine (Crucial_Fiction here) bombed me today with an Opus X Forbidden. I should have never started researching this cigar because now I'm I'm afraid to smoke it. I was considering saving it for my graduation from grad school either with my masters or PhD. I know, I know do what makes you happy. But I was talking about this with the g/f and she said "save it" which is what got me thinking about why "saving it" is so looked down upon. Or maybe that's just my misinterpretation of what I've seen.

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
I dont see anything wrong with saving up a cigar for a special occasion. The only downside I can see is that depending on the format and smoking time, it may not fit in with your other plans in which case you might not get the 'best' from it.

I'm starting to smoke more and more of the cigars I use to consider "special." A Saturday night under the stars now qualifies.

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
I'm guilty of saving some sticks for special occasions. I have a few sticks that I save that when a special occasion does come I'm actually going to have to choose which stick to put to death first. I see nothing wrong with saving a hard to get stick for something special. This thread was just recently discussed. Do a search. You would be surprised how common this practice has become. I recently bought a couple Opus and Anejos from a fellow BOTL, and planned on smoking one of each and then letting the rest lay down for the perfect time to smoke them. I just found a local B&M that carries Opus for about $16 a stick so I may go through those sooner than expected. They also have the Sopranos priced a little better than the rest of the B&Ms so I may actually give one of those a whirl. Good luck ,and I vote save it if it's something special for you. From what I hear the Opus' only get better with age anyways. Just my

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
Well, cigars are meant to be smoked. However, in my personal opinion there is nothing wrong with saving a particular cigar for a special occasion. It all depends on how long you must save it. You also have to weigh how much are you going to enjoy it. I mean you are talking gaduation, are you going to smoke it at your graduation party, with other folks around. Chatting, drinking... will you enjoy it. Or perhaps a nice night, sitting outside with your girl friend a nice cocktail. Where you can take your time and enjoy it.
I was gifted a nice Opus X Perfection X around Christmas. I was going to smoke it for NYE, but decided not too. In March we went to St Croix USVI. Our first night there after dinner, we sat out on our patio over looking the ocean with a glass of Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum and smoked it then. It was much more enjoyable then it would have been at a party.

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
The most expensive cigars in my humidoor are sat aside for special occassions as they come up. Example: end of last semester was an occassion for a graycliff. Nothing long term, but it needs to be something celebratory if I am going to burn something I had rather not have to replace.

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
I used to "save" cigars only to find out when the occasion came to smoke them, I would either hype them up too much and be disappointed, I would just find out the cigar didn't suit my tastes or I would choose the wrong cigar for the time frame I had. Its only a rolled up weed, smoke it whenever you want. When I want to smoke something for a special occasion I will usually smoke a favorite cigar I've already tried. Breathing and making it through another day is enough of a special occasion for me to smoke a Cohiba Sublime or a HdM DC.
Ageing a cigar you don't like won't make it any better, but ageing a smoke you do like will make it amazing. Bottom line, do whatever floats your boat! |

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
Probably depends on how many special cigars you have or can get. I used to get things and never smoke them. Waiting for "that special occasion". I only have 2 daughters to marry off and you cant smoke that many cigars in one day...so you downgrade the definition and start smoking them.
Life can be short. You hope it isn't, but you might as well enjoy the best yours has to offer while you can. |

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
Yeah Dave, when that car just about hit you a while back it put things in perspective didn't it. I used to hold out for a special occasion, but now I know just about all the sticks I have can be replaced (some might be harder than others
). I will be enjoying this hobby for some time, so there will always be other nice sticks down the road. Sometimes I can't believe how many "special" sticks I've accumilated. I then start thinning them out .Jeff (DonJefe) said it best, "Special occasion? How about waking up in the morning!! Smoke it, that's why they rolled it!!" BTW.. those are some NICE smokes you got in the bomb....

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
And then - what happens when that special day comes and you pull out that special cigar you were saving - and it totally sucks. Now talked about being pissed off.
Reason I mention it is this - I have two Opus X Forbidden X - tubed - that I have put away for when my daughters get married (years away). Now for Fathers Day I pulled out another smaller Opus and sat back to enjoy it. One of the worst cigars I have ever had (right other the other Opus X's) - very harsh - ton of pepper. I struggled through 30 mins before tossing and picking up an Anjeo 77 - first one - and was in bliss for the next two hours. Soooooo - I'm rethinking those saved two Opus - they may end up a fourth smoke in a drinking binge Ron |

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
I do not save cigars for a long time for a special occasion for all the reasons stated above, especially because you might not be here tomorrow.
If the occasion is that special, buy an OpusX just before, maybe a month early. Who cares about dropping $25-$40 on a cigar to smoke at your daughters wedding. If you're aging them that's a different story, but only having two is not enough to be aging.

Re: I get the feeling that saving cigars for "special occasions"
As you get older you start realizing any day can be a special day. I have a few Opus I am saving, but only for a few months when I know I will be getting together with a friend I don't see often. We both enjoy fine cigars, and this year it is my turn to bring the Opus. All the others are fair game whenever I feel like it is the right time....like now.
Think I will grab a good one and head to the patio.

It's fine to save a certain cigar for a special occasion. But pick the occasion and save it for that day. Don't just say to yourself I will smoke this on a "special" day. Why? I have an unopened bottle of Gordons Gin from 1924 that my father told me we would open on a special day. He past away in 1985.
