Question for you experts about Beads.

No, its not about how they work, I already know that much. But I'm wondering WHERE you put your beads in your humidor. I've just got a desktop-type humidor that holds maybe 50-75 cigars at the most. The reason I'm wondering is this: I just bought a 1/2 lb. of beads from Heartfelt Industries, sprayed them down, got them ready and put them in the little mesh baggy I also ordered from them...... and then look in my humidor. No where to set them. Do you guys just set the beads on top of your cigars or what? Doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I cant hang them from the top with the drawstring the baggy has because the humidor isnt large enough for that. Can I put the beads in a shot glass and stick it in the corner of the humidor? Sounds good to me, but will that be enough beads for that many cigars? I've probably got 40 cigars in there and some are expensive, so I dont want to put too LITTLE amount of beads in there and then have my good ones dry up. I guess just a little insight and advice is what I'm looking for. Any help is appreciated. Going to work soon and I'll be back at 11pm CT to check answers. Thanks.

I've got 2 shot glasses filled with beads, one in each bottom corner. Works good for me...My humi has been a steady 68% for weeks.

Yeah - sometimes the tubes work out better than the drawsacks. I had some old Drymistat tubes that I emptied and used with the beads - works out very well.
Also - what type of humidifier came with the unit? You may be able to convert it to use with the beads. See the link in my sig about updating them.

Re: Question for you experts about Beads.

Hello,

I use the tubes that are available from Heartfelt for my humidors. They are about the size of a cigar and they take up less room than a mesh bag.

Question: Are you using the full 1/2 lb. for your humidor? That seems like a bit much. Bead amount recommendations can be found at the Heartfelt site.

If you are using a mesh bag, I would make sure it is not dripping and then set it on something like a small piece of thin wood to separate it from the cigars.

Best of luck,

Blake

Re: Question for you experts about Beads.

I bought some pantyhose from the dollar store and split the beads amongst a couple of them. Looks silly, but is easy to mist them, they breathe well and spread well. As mentioned above, surface area is the key with beads.
If the dish you're using won't fit, find something that does!

Question Re: Question for you experts about Beads.

This is good information and very helpful, as I am still thinking about getting the Beads.

For those in the know, I have a 150 count cigar Humidor that I keep my ready to smoke cigars in. However, I usually only have about 50/60 cigars in it, at any given time. Would it be beneficial to purchase two of the small 1/2 oz or 1 oz bead tube units and keep one on the bottom shelf and one on the top shelf, rather than buying one larger 2oz bead tube unit and keeping it on the bottom?

That's what I do in my desktop. I've found that no matter what humidification device I use in the bottom cavity, it does not adequately humidify the top tray -- especially when the tray is close to full. I use a larger tube in the bottom and a smaller tube in the top to provide additional humidification and stabilize the environment. Works well and the smaller tube doesn't take much space if you run it parallel to the front cover and place the shorter sticks in that part of the tray. I put a hygro in both the bottom and top periodically to make certain things are still in balance.

When in doubt, buy more beads than you need. It can't hurt. In fact, I've found that things stay stable for longer when you have excess beads.

I like that tube... dunno why I didnt notice it before when I was ordering from them. But now I may order one, or two. Thanks! I think that would fit nicely in my humi, about the same size as yours it seems, I have a few more cigars, but i could take some of the "cheaper" ones out and put them somewhere else for the time being and just keep my prized 'gars in the humi. Thanks again!

Thanks for the input. It all makes sense to me, so that is the way I'll go!
