Cigar Aficionado - The Magazine

You know - I just got my latest copy of CA yesterday and spent a whole whopping 10 mins reading it. I have had the subscription for the past couple of years and don't have a clue why I keep paying them.

I don't Golf.
Can't afford the cars.
Not looking to buy a jet.
Not interested in the over priced gadgets.
Could care less about the resorts.
I read the reviews - but don't believe them.
Only read half the interviews.

I can get better, realistic reviews here on CS - and the interviews on Dogwatch and Stogie Fresh are much more intertaining.

So - one more issue and then it's more money for smokes!

Re: Cigar Aficionado - The Magazine

For me its not that I don't believe their reviews, its that they like sum up a cigar in one line without giving details about the blend or history of the cigar or brand or notes of the whole experience. It is such an impersonal review, its almost like "hey heres some table scraps so we are still a cigar magazine"

Re: Cigar Aficionado - The Magazine

I enjoy the ten minutes it takes to read it, but it's not worth buying. Fortunately, a guy at work buys it, so I skim his and return it without having to shell out any money.

We actually were discussing it last night. It's not really a cigar magazine; it's a culture magazine that has a couple of articles about cigars. I guess it's worth it if that's what you're looking for, but it's not really for me.

Re: Cigar Aficionado - The Magazine

I've got a subscription to GQ; same ol' same ol' as CA, but without the cigars

Which is why I never felt the need to get a CA subscription.

You've noticed that over the years, the word 'Cigar' in the mast has been set in smaller type.

I agree with you bud. I'm not getting what I expected when I subscribed to CA. The older issues where so much better. I'm not renewing mine once it expires. I am impressed with Smoke magazine. They tend to stay more with issues pertaining to cigars.

I just enjoy the pretty pictures and the advertisements.

Fuente: "never rushing the hands of time" or something like that.

I don't believe the reviews, but at least I get to see different cigars.

Anyone ever tried the oliva they rated so high? They run pretty cheap.

Plus the cohiba humidor was pretty cool.

Re: Cigar Aficionado - The Magazine

I'm with you guys. Dropped CA a few months ago. I do find Cigar Magazine to have some good stuff. It seems to be much better aimed at true BOTLs. For reviews I go to CS, Top25Cigar and Famous plus the DWSC Podcast.

Re: Cigar Aficionado - The Magazine

If your very wealthy, CA is a decent magazine, with the exception of their Cigar Reviews Section, which is absolutley worthless Bull S--T!!!

On the other hand, two very decent cigar magazines, with decent reviews, are "Cigar", which is somehow part of or realted to JR Cigars and my favorite, "Smoke Magazine". If you have not tried either of them, they are worth a look-see!

I agree. After the 91 rated cigar comes the full page ad of that cigar...coincidence?

Re: Cigar Aficionado - The Magazine

I know a lot of guys knock this mag, and yes, it has gone downhill since the end of the boom.
That being said, CA is one of the few magazines that still features my passion........cigars.

For what it's worth, CA is partly responsible for the huge interest in cigars back in the early 90's and the start of the boom.
Personally I bought and read it ever since it's inception. Because of this mag, I experimented and developed my palate. CA stirred up my passion for cigars. I remember I used to search out and purchase two of every cigar rated 89 and higher. Yes, I bought a lot of duds, but I also found some sleepers. But most importantly, this helped develop my palate and experience.

Now, I mostly buy this magazine for one page and one page only in the entire mag...........the vintage reviews. IMHO these reviews are different from the others. I find them for the most part, to be fairly accurate and often mirrors my own opinions of the cigars they are reviewing.
