Cigars have been made in Cuba for much longer than Communism and Castro have been in power. This tradition is one that I think we can all agree deserves our respect. Through the processes of regime change in this "Island South of Miami", the legacy of cigarmaking has continued for generations. While I wouldnt senselessly flame someone on the internet for using a term like this, I would fault them for falling into the tiger trap of Cold War American propaganda, belittling it to empower the strong arm of democracy. Namely, the rights of these citizens are not the same as us, therefore it is an inferior system.
Without soundling like a confounded liberal, let me expound. This world is comprised of many different countries with many different ideas of how a government should work in relation to it's people. Because we live in economic and political liberty, we regard it as the best sytem of government, because, quite frankly, it is all we know. If you ask the bulk of Iraq right now, democracy isn't working as well as anticipated. Can democracy be forced on a nation unwilling to recieve it. I suppose it's an argument for other issues.
What's in question here is the practices of one government, and our criticism of it. I personally do not believe democracy is right for every nation. That there are some things, such as religious, racial, and ethical issues that cannot be resolved by democractic elections and buzz word like "Free elections". The world is not as clear cut as this. Try to look at it from a different view. Certainly this isnt like calling the Middle-East "god's armpit", but it is still at least slightly disrespectful. Perhaps if our government was a bit more socialist, we wouldnt have this vast, far-reaching corruption that we have with Congress, private organizations, and the military-industrial complex as a whole.
Bottom line, is using terms like ISOM is inviting the rants of assholes like the one you encountered. Unfortunatley, by some damnable glitch of modern science, most assholes have computers and internet access.
When was the last time you saw a US citizen flea to Cuba on a boat that once was a car?

Well I have heard of American's running to Canada to dodge the draft during the Vietnam War. we call those people traitors and cowards. Perhaps they just disagreed with a current policy, a policy we now know to be foolhardy and fueled by greed. And the only reason we dont build a fence around Florida is to keep up the image that amirica is the safe haven from the evils of Communism.

If theres a revolution in Cuba, and democracy springs up from the cracks in the sidewalk, will the cubans stay here? It's a question worth asking. Trust me, in no way is Cuba the worst country in the world, the most oppressive of it's people. The citizens/prisoners of North Korea would give their right arms for the kinds of rights Cubans have. And rarely is the fairly tale of the American Dream lived out by Cuban immigrants. Are they cowards? Do they just disagree? Or are they tempted by a self rightous land that calls them the ISOM?

This is wrong on so many levels as to be mindboggling.
Let's skip all the socialist rant and hit one point....Who determined that "ISOM" was "Cold War American Propaganda"?
or for that matter....who determined that it was denigrating?
It may be a silly term, but reading political motivations into it is reaching a mite, eh?
The guy is 43 years old with a picture dressed like a mafiosa on MySpace.....need we say more?

This is a cigar board, not a forum for U.S.A. bashing. If you think freedom and democracy can't work everywhere you are mistaken. Granted, it is a concept that is above the capacity of many to comprehend. Especially those that have been repressed for a long time. If you want a platform for spouting socialist propaganda go somewhere else.

Re: A 43 year old man owned me. (verbally...)

Before I am banished by popular opinion from the CS realm, I'm not a freedom-hating, America-bashing socialist. I'm merely playing devil's advocate to an issue that seems to be very one-sided, and trying to offer a different perspecive on it. I'm not using this forum as a soapbox, and I wouldn't go trying to stir up trouble on the internet, as it is quite childish to do so. To be labled as anti-american simply for a different point of view and doing so in what I believe a civilized manner is unfair and, quite honestly, communist. I believe the democratic system is the finest in the world, but far from infallable and far from perfect. I never said "Gee we all oughta be like Cuba cause there's nothing wrong with it." I understand the inherent flaws in communism. I also understand that no system is above criticism, and since most of the defense of these other side came by way of Cuba's political and domestic practices, it's where i chose to aim my counterpoint.

Haha! I found him too. Almost sent him a message, but ya' know, its not worth my time. I did report his page for having "inappropriate content" though, just to annoy him since that only took a few seconds.

I definitely would NOT have apologized to the moron though, but I'm not one for being the "better man" when attacked. Lol! Kudos to you for keeping your cool.

Cheers!

Is "ISOM" a degrading term in your opinion?

I'd tell him politely to bite me. Sounds like someone who has an anger control problem.

Believe what you like, afterall, that is what makes America great. This is just not the place for it. All you are trying to do is stir up anger in the jungle. Again, take it elsewhere.

What was the guys name on the other site.....

fcastro.dictator.cuba.gov@myspace.com

Seriously though, the guy is obviously very balled up. Don't take something like this personally and no you didn't get owned. I'm with Leafhog, you can call them anything you want.

Just to show some brotherhood with this guy, you should send him a 5er of Cremosas

Re: A 43 year old man owned me. (verbally...)

I'll relate to you a story I've been told a few time by a number of people here in S. Korea.

A Korean businessman was talking to an American over lunch, upset with Japan and what is known in Korea as the East Sea. He was angry because the Japanese insist on calling it the Sea of Japan. "They do not own the sea, what right do they have to call it the sea of Japan!"
The American replied "No right, I suppose. But this same sea, you call it the East Sea, yes?" The man nodded, and the American asked "So what is it East of?" Korea, of course. You see, Korea and Japan have held bitter, conflicting views on a number of subjects because of their torrid history and close proximity to one another. Even the spelling of Korea with a "K" is said to stem from Japanese occupation. Originally, it was spelled with a "C", but the Japanese did not want Korea coming before Japan in the Roman alphabet, so they changed the spelling in the early 20th century. Is this story true? Who knows. It might've been the act of an ill-informed cartographer. Nevertheless, it remains a heated talking point in the country to this day.

I apologize, opusxox, and to anyone else I may have offended or angered with my posts, as it was not my intention to do so. That said, I refer back to the original topic of this thread:

You're reading too much into the term ISOM. I have never, ever heard it used connotating disrespect for Cuba. It is a trendy, cliquish term that we BOTL's like to use. So get off your soapbox, you're tilting at windmills and seeing monsters under the bed.
