Re: Humidor Suggestions?

No professional here, just another noob.

I use a 200 qt coolerdor for storage and a 300 ct desktop for cigars in my regular rotation. The criteria for a humi is personal choice, but go BIG!

I went with a glass top so I can see in and make my decision before opening the humi. The top tray hold cigars ready to smoke, the bottom holds those that are aclimating to my desired 65%. I also chose a humi with an accessory drawer at the bottom to hold cutters, lighters & assorted stuff. And a lock was important to prevent my grandson from pouring chocolate milk onto my babies.

Good luck, let us know what you decide.

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

What I look for is a humi that holds steady humidity, beyond that nothing. To be truthful I've gotten great service from my old Thompson freebies. A little maintenence goes a long way. Good luck...Dave

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

Better get a big one....I have two desktops....100ct each and they are full thanks to this site. One has a glass window and I like that because I can check the humidity without opening the lid. Both have trays...which I like. If you have an assortment it is good to be able to organize a bit.

But the important thing is to get a big one...I can't stress this enough.

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

Trays and dividers are most important to me beyond quality, keeps everything organized and accessible. If I were to buy another I would also look for a glass top so that I don't have to open it everytime I want to stare at my sticks!

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

Well just another noob throwing in ...so here we go. For me having just purchased a desktop, and not having too big a stash, I went with something that was appealing to my eye, simply because I plan to one day have this sitting on a desk or somewhere readily visible. I figure one day this will also be perfect to hold my everyday smokes. If I were to get another, I would probably go with a coolerdor, because they work and are cheaper. Anything that holds humidity for you will be great. If you get one that has an analog hygro, use it only as ornamentation. Get yourself a digital, and a wireless one so if you do get a humi with no window, you can check the RH without opening her up. Well there you have it. This post turned out to be a lot longer than originally anticipated. enjoy!

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

Alright.. Well there is this sweet 300ct humidor i can buy for about $38 shipped that has two accessory drawers, trays anddividers but no window.. Or i can buy this 150ct humidor that has a window...removable trays but no accesory drawers. I feel like the 300 would be a little too big...however i know you guys would disagree with the size saying get it as big as possible. For a newbie which do you think would be acceptable?

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

I have a small humidor with a window. I chose this primarily to keep an eye on the digital hygrometer inside as well as the cigars, without having to open it. I use this for the ones I will be smoking in the near future. You can get larger window types with trays as well. Whatever one you choose, make sure it has a good seal.

Now my main storage is a no frills, blue and white, "windowless" coolerdor.

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

I use a 60 quart cooler - $15 at Wal Mart and its currently holding 15 boxes. Some people get trays or line their coolers with cedar - those are purely cosmetic in my opinion.

While some people will argue that the wood lining can help to store/replenish moisture; filling all the space in the cooler with boxes provides just as much or more cedar surface area than lining/trays. What is more empty cigar boxes are cheap or free..

Top notch cigar storage can be had with the following:

cooler
cedar cigar boxes
humidity beads
A hygrometer is useful until you are able to smell/feel proper humidity when you lift the lid..

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

I'd buy whatever looks good (and works!) and build a coolidor for any "overspill".

My 150 count humidor is less than two weeks in service and is now FULL!!! I just put two boxes of Padrons in there though, so my plan is to build a coolidor (already have another pound of 65% beads) and put the Padrons back in the boxes and store them there, along with my other planned box purchases...

Whatever you choose, I'd recommend the beads. I probably use twice as many as I need for the space in my humi, but its well worth it for the peace of mind. My humi stays at a steady 65-66% and at 72-73 degrees in my guest bathroom, which is the coolest room in my house.

Re: Humidor Suggestions?

I have 2 desk tops and one coolidor. Of the desk tops, the first was a machine made, the second a higher end, man made from one piece of wood. My personal preference is to stay away from the glass

I'm ageing some of mine, keep lists of what I have and what "vintage" it is, and I go into each a couple of times a week so seeing into them without opening not needed.

Trays and dividers are a necessary thing for me as I take the cello off, and want separation between the sun grown and maduro sticks

Really not a right or wrong answer, IMHO, it's more of preference and need - and I don't do windows
