Cigar Strength Question

Ok so last month I had a JDN Celebration. Like a 4 by 54 or something. I don't remember the exact dimensions. This was always called a very strong stick, sit while smoking etc...

Well I didn't even get a buzz off of it. Hmm

The last night I had a Sancho Panza Ex Fuerte and it roundhouse kicked me in the face.

I even had a La Vieja Habana give me a buzz, much more than the JdN.

Whats up?

Re: Cigar Strength Question

The celebration is not that strong. The comments you must be thinking of are in reference the the JdN Antano 1970 which is very strong.

Re: Cigar Strength Question

The strength of a cigar is more in reference to the taste profile of the specific stick, not the "hit you in the face" buzz effect.

I think the usage must vary a bit from person to person. If somebody tells me a cigar is "strong" I take it to mean Full Bodied which speaks to the "buzz factor." There is also Full Flavored which speaks to the qualities on the palate. The two do often go hand in hand however.

For example: Gispert could be considered Full flavored yet Mild bodied.

Re: Cigar Strength Question

Ah ok, so I had my cigars mixed up then. Thanks. I'm going to check my bands to make sure it wasn't a 1970 though.

Ive been told that using the term 'strong' to describe a cigar is in fact a cigar faux pas in that it insults the blender. strong apparently refers to a harsh, bad taste rather than a powerful one which is 'full-bodied'. no idea where i picked this up though-its probably some CA

Re: Cigar Strength Question

Regardless of what cigar you smoke it is very possible for cigars to effect you differently from day to day depending on what you have eaten, drinking at the time, etc. With that said the JDN Antano 1970 is the only cigar Cuban or NC to ever give me a slight buzz in my 15 years of smoking.

Re: Cigar Strength Question

I have been very confussed on the difference of full flavored, full bodied, mild, smooth, harsh, ect. I can never discribe it.

For me, I guess it's like Potter Stewart's definition of pornagraphy: "I know it when I see it."

Re: Cigar Strength Question

I had a Litto Gomez once on an empty stomach and thought it was one of the strongest I have ever had, and it made me a little sick. Then a few weeks later I had a nice big meal and tried one and thought it wasnt as strong and felt fine. It could be partly mental, but it could have been the case of what you ate that day. I dont think what you had is that strong but some of there other stuff is pretty potent.

Have a great weekend everyone

Re: Cigar Strength Question

i wouldnt consider the perdomo estate selection to be considered a very strong cigar but i was F*%#ed up after i smoked it for some reason, maybe because i was drinking a beer at the time who knows....but ive had a dark knight and that is supposed to be a stronger cigar and i felt nothing....its all preference and who you are as an individual.

I, too, struggle with the ambiguousness of "cigar speak". Personally, I try to subscribe to a methodology presented for describing cigar characteristics by John Chunko. His article can be found here:

Everyone may not agree with it, but I do genuinely wish that a widely understood and accepted methodology existed and was used.

Try a La Flor double ligero, they might give you a kick. Especially the chisel is a great smoke.

Thanks for the link. I agree with most of what this guy says but there are a few points on which the usage differs from what my smoking circle uses (the only usages I am really familiar with). I would also like to see a more standardized methodology but, considering how long it took to learn "cigar speak" to begin with, I think it would be difficult to bring everybody to agreement on terms that have held different meanings for people for years.

Have you tried an El Rico Habano?
