How long to wait

How long do you wait between receiving a shipment and actually firing it up? I bought a sampler from a reputable company and fired one up after a week in the humidor and it was really dry. Granted I'm new to the scene and I've never had this particular brand but it seemed really dry (flavor and aroma were acrid). Is this normal or should I expect to wait a month (and of course learn to feel for dryness)?

A month is best but a week is minimum.

I almost
I agree with the week minimum but I think 2 is sufficient. I apply the same rule whether receiving cigars from a vendor or via a bomb/trade/PIF.

Re: How long to wait

What kind of sampler/smokes did you get? It woud help to know that. Most all of the smokes I get in are on the wet side - and a week in the humidor is not going to dry them out that much.

Re: How long to wait

this thread makes me sad. I was going to fire up a montie #5 I got on friday via a gift and I was going to smoke that tonight. But I guess I should let it sit.

Re: How long to wait

Acrid says "wet." Seems that most mail order cigars are shipped wet. Give it a rest for a month and see what you think.

Re: How long to wait

Hmmm...
received a box of party shorts today-
SOP for me is fire one up upon receipt if
the mood strikes me.
After that first one the smokes get anywhere from a couple weeks to
months/years to rest.

Re: How long to wait

I can't seem to ever wait, but most of the cigars I order taste fine right out of the package.

Re: How long to wait

Hmm. After my dissappointment, I started squeezing them and they felt hard. Didn't give at all. The particular cigar was a La Tradicion Cabinet Series Perdomo Reserva. I don't want to whine too hard for fear of alienating a sponser/contributor with what may be my lack of experience/misunderstanding. The smoke itself was the opposite of what I would call a thick or creamy smoke and the draw was too easy with only a brush fire flavor. My hygrometer was still on back order at the time so I have no idea what my fairly new humidor was doing at the time. The humi beads were fairly saturated so I don't think it was too far off.

So is that all you got was a Perdomo sampler? If you got something else were they hard also?
I can tell you that although most people like Perdomo - I haven't really found one that I like. I find them harsh and tasteless. I think I have a couple of the La Tradicion left - I'll check them as see how dense they are.

Re: How long to wait

No, it was a mixed bag of different brands. Gurkha, Indian Tobac, CAO, etc. They were all hard. I pulled them from the celophane after that and they seem to be getting spongier. The wrapper of one of them split a little at the cut end shortly afterwards from what I assume was hydrating too quick? Maybe that brand just doesn't suit me. Maybe I'm just a fawking newbie that doesn't know any better. Either way, I won't touch any of the others for a couple of weeks just to make sure.
