Ashton Cabinet Let Down

Now I know that in my infancy as a cigar smoker my opinions are not that of the seasoned veterans here in the jungle. That being said I had a pretty bad run in with an Ashton Cabinet last night. Right from the get go I have negative things to say. The construction was extremely flawed, cracks and tears in the wrapper at the foot. Now I must say I was very excited to smoke this gar as many in my area have said good things regarding Ashton Cigars. I had a terrible day at work and my loving fiancee stopped off at the stogie store and picked this dog rocket up to give me a mood boost. What a great woman I have. Back to the cigar. The pre light draw tasted wonderfull. Mild, earthy. I was really excited to light this bad boy up. So I give it a nice cut, toast him, light em up, and then it hits me......The feeling of aboulute fire on my tongue. I heard someone else in the forum say its like sucking the flame through the cigar. That is exactly what it was like. The flavors were ok mixed with not good at all. Had to nub it out at 3/4 smoked. Any one else have run ins with ashton?

I have very limited experience with them, but the ones I have had were good sticks. I have always been pleased with the quality of Fuente products for that matter.

If the wrapper was torn and cracked perhaps it wasn't stored properly?

No. I won't buy them based on reviews like this and the fact that I think they're extremely overpriced. The owners of my B&M think the same thing and they don't even smoke them. There's too many good smokes out there to pay $10 for a dog rocket. I just won't risk it.

Nice looking cigars, though.

Dave, if I had to be brutally honest I might be afraid I would love the damn things and then be locked into having to stock expensive sticks on a regular basis.

I keep quality cigars, but I don't typically don't stock high priced smokes like Ashton, Davidoff, & Graycliff. I can't make myself do it when I love smokes that are 1/2 - 1/3 of those brands prices.

Re: Ashton Cabinet Let Down

On my very first visit to B&M I bought one out of a half-price close out drawer. After a couple of days I smoked it, that's when I first really appreciated my Flor de Olivas. Will have to learn a lot more about the Ashton line before trying any more of their products considering their prices.

Love the Ashton VSG, even for the price they are worth it every once in awhile. When I find some for under $10 I get a few. Have not tried the other Ashtons yet.

Re: Ashton Cabinet Let Down

i had the number 2 cabinet. I Enjoyed it. tight draw at first but it opened up. I havn't smoked much myself, but it was creamy with an imediate toasty after taste like from a Padron 2000, for 1/3 the price guess i should just smoke those! Honestly though this was smoother IMHO. If you ever find the #2 for a steal, try that one.

Re: Ashton Cabinet Let Down

I love the Ashton Cabinets so much I buy a box at a time. I've never had this happen with one after several boxes, so you probably just got a bad one.

+1 I had the exact same experience a few years ago. I haven't bought one since. Way to much $$$ as well.

Re: Ashton Cabinet Let Down

It's been a while since I smoked an Ashton Cabinet. But, the ones I've smoked were really good mild-medium smokes. Never had a construction problem and, if I remember, really enjoyed the flavor. Still have a couple of #6's buried somewhere. Maybe I ought to dig one up tomorrow morning with my coffee and refresh my memory.

I enjoy most of the Ashton lines. Just "won" some of Aged Maduro on the devil site. "Fire" has never been a description that I would have given any of them. I wonder if the ones you had might have been a little too dry?

I am not a fan of the Ashton Cabinet either, but I love the Ashton Heritage Puro Sol. The Heritage and Puro Sol are the same cigar. The Heritage Puro Sol Beli is my favorite in that line.

The VSG's are my favorite of all the Ashton brands.
