Yeah, I really got ripped recently from jumping on these C-bid 'closeouts.' What was I thinking:

Lot: Padilla Special Edition Cedro Robusto (5)
Quantity: 1 at $9.00
Total: $9.00

Lot: Padilla Hybrid Robusto (5)
Quantity: 1 at $11.00
Total: $11.00

Lot: Rocky Patel Connecticut Toro (5)
Quantity: 1 at $13.00
Total: $13.00

Lot: Black Pearl Toro - Rojo (5)
Quantity: 1 at $11.00
Total: $11.00

Can you believe it? I paid $2.60/stick for the RP Connecticut. You know, that's just me....I've got to dig my heels in and overpay for a stick. I'm sure so many of you can find cheaper. Please post links so I won't get ripped off again.

Here's my 2 cents worth- Do your research and don't narrow your options to one or two web sites. I check the prices on about 5 or 6 before purchasing online. I recently bought a 20 pack sampler( RP Mild) for $20. The 1990 Vintage smokes paid for the whole thing pricewise. I had one of RP Connecticuts and loved it! This smoke was mild but delicious! I went online to buy a box and they wanted approx. $90 for a box. 5 packs were $24. I went to cigar bid and got a 5 pack for $13, that included the shipping! Just do the research.

Okay - Here ya go - RP Connecticut - CLICK HERE

They are back ordered - but I spent the $80 bucks for a total of 40 sticks (freebies). That's down to $2 bucks each.

But like Bob said - check several sites before you order - look for the deals that toss in extra sticks - first thing I look for -

Agreed, I went to one of those IRS Government Auctions once and I was amazed at what people would pay. 2 guys going back in forth on a bidding war over a 94 Ford Escape, I estimated they paid about 2,500 more then at the dealer(I saw same model 2 days prior while car shopping) and on top of it no warranty or guarantees what so ever comes with it.

Actually no, you did not get ripped for those smokes but, there are many times when other nimwits will overbid a perfectly good item simply cuz they are nimwits So if a logical guy does his HW and sets say a price of 15 dollars for a bundle of RP Vintage 1990 Robustos, and some nimwit comes in and boosts it up to 29 bucks, I'd get peeved too. But I would have to simply walk away from that grateful that I wasn't sucked into paying overprice, or more than I wanted to; there will be more auction opportunities every day.

I've had pretty good luck on bids ending late Saturday night. The last couple I won didn't even go higher than my minimum bid. I guess people just weren't checking CBid at that time.

I think he was being sarcastic, but I might be wrong. Those prices don't look that bad IMO.

I actually have never bought anything from cbid and probably won't in the future. I just couldn't believe someone would pay that much for a shorty story, when you can get them on 100 websites for less than 6 bucks.

By the way, how are the Padilla Special Edition Cedro Robusto and the Padilla Hybrid Robusto? I was looking at these myself.

What if I don't want 40 sticks of the RPs? I had never tried the Connecticuts and I didn't want to buy a box. And you know just as well as I that the deal I got on C-bid was excellent. The toro 5 packs at CI are $24 and I paid almost half that much.

Really this C-Bid bashing is kind of dumb. There are excellent deals to be had on *non-closeout* sticks and just because you find a handful of characters bidding outrageous amounts doesn't make that typical of the entire system.

I never intended this thread to be a c-bid bashing, as others have said, you just have to be careful what you buy. Don't assume everything is going to be cheaper than what you would find it for elsewhere. The shorty story is a great example and I often see padron anniversaries I can find cheaper elsewhere. This is just my opinion, cbid does nothing wrong, I just feel bad for the people who are bidding, since they can get the stuff cheaper elsewhere. I wish I could just email them and let them know. I was a little bothered by the fact that the picture in the link above is not a short story, of course the correct size is listed below, but they should probably use the correct pictures (I assume they have a disclaimer saying something about the picture not being exactly the same as what you are bidding on).

I sort of understand the prices paid for opusX and anejos, since these are pretty expensive and harder to find online. It has taken a while to find some places that sell opusX close to MSRP and most of the time they only have one or two different varieties.

The stuff you bought looks pretty good to me, have you tried the padillas yet? I have a couple of padilla miami's I can't wait to try. Wondering how the rest of the padilla line runs.

I like both Padillas....maybe the cedros more than the hybrids. I prefer a fuller body smoke but they are pretty decent.

Hehe, yeah I knew he was, but I thought it was unecessary
There are lots of nitwits (was the point) and what you saw was just one prime example among many, so ya gotta be careful. One doesn't always get good deals thru bids because of the nitwits.
And speaking of Thompsons, they sent me a catalogue for August and I looked through it, they advertised they had Padron Samplers for sale; one at 66 bucks and the other at 80 bucks. I thought that was strange so I went to their sire....I couldn't find ANY Padron Anniversaries AT ALL.
There is a connection here for me; I can never find any Padron Annis up for bid at C-Bid and place a bid without some desperate dweebs driving the bidding up well beyond MSRP. Some will offer reasons for it, in an effort to explain lunacy like that but, I don't buy it.

I almost bought that sampler (I believe it was the 1926 maduro) for 66 bucks, but then they wanted something like 22 dollars for priority mail shipping (I already made a post about that situation ). I guess they ran out of them. Their website in general is pretty confusing, the search feature brings up weird stuff.

If you are still looking for some of those samplers, check out some of these sites: I have bought from MDcigars before and the service was great (I actually picked up a couple of padron samplers a couple of months ago, after shipping, they were basically going to be the same price as thompsons). If you join cigar weekly, they give all members a 10% discount (http://forums.cigarweekly.com/viewtopic.php?t=121185).

http://www.mdcigars.com/padron.htm

This place is pretty cheap, however, I have never dealt with them except through email (I only wish they had anejos in stock - trust me, I already asked).

http://www.discountcigars.org/cigars.asp?parentval=77
http://www.discountcigars.org/cigars.asp?parentval=244

The premium maduro sampler is a pretty good price (IMO) and you get a couple of 1926 and a couple of 1964 (plus free shipping). They also advertise here on CS.

http://www.billboardtobacco.com/padron.html

Just in case you needed a little more temptation.

Either way, people are not very smart when it comes to bidding. There is just a certain "pride" factor in losing an auction, or so I've seen.
and thats how they make the money

I'm fairly new to C-Big. I've paid internet prices for a few smokes on C-Bid, but I've also come away with some good deals (MonteCristo White Belicoso - $5/each, Ghurka - $2.50/each).
I've seen the idiots as well....a box of Sancho Panza on C-Bid still going for over $65 (auction ends (8/27)...JR Cigar retail/internet $49.
