the hygrometer in my humidor is the one that came with it when i bought it. for about 4 or 5 days I had a digital in it and they both read the same. is it ok for me to rely on the brass hygrometer or get a digital to mainly rely on?

Re: hygrometers

i have two analog hygromteters. the nicer one is about 20 points off, while the cheaper looking one is pretty much dead on. i still rely on my digitals and use the analogs for decoration...

Re: hygrometers

I would rely on it if they both read the same...in the future though if it seems like it's not right...check it again..but yeah I would trust it.

Re: hygrometers

I havent looked at my analog in about the six weeks since I got my digital. Ok, just checked it and it reads 68 which is off by ten from my digital. But if yours is on I would say use it. Just be careful cuz if it gets knocked around at all it can get out of whack. That's the main reason I don't use the analog, cuz they are fragile. Pretty though.

Re: hygrometers

get a digital, radio shack is a pretty trusted brand around here. Ive got two- 20 bucks apiece, worth every penny. Or you can try one from wally world for 12 bucks that is also pretty good but they tend to be hit or miss on accuracy.

Re: hygrometers

Are you really planning to rely on a $1.99 piece of equipment to safeguard your cigars?

I made that mistake a long time ago when I got my first humi. I triple calibrated the analog that came with it - it read 75 on the line after the salt tests. I was sure I was smarter than all the other cigar folks who said the analog wasn't worth the box it came in . . . I finally got my humi to stabilize at 70, and that's where it stayed for the first three or four months, at least according to my analog hygrometer, as my smokes got drier and more acrid. Long story short - even thought the hygro didn't budge from 70, the rh had dropped off precipitously and all but ruined three boxes of good smokes, and a few Opus X singles.

You can spare the 20-25 bucks. You cannot spare the hundreds in dried (or moldy) cigars.

Re: hygrometers

I'd personally go with digital. I only recently upgraded to a digital hygrometer, and its just nice to have the peace of mind, as I was always worrying about whether the analogue was accurate or not. They're pretty inexpensive, too.

Re: hygrometers

Go with the digi as the analogues are so easy to go wrong with, one little knock and the analogues useless, you may not even know its happened. Digi=peace of mind.
