Mold On Romeo And Juliet

I have had a RomeoandJuliet sitting in my humidor for a few months now. This cigar is wrapped in cedar. Pulled it out this morning to have with my coffee. Took the cedar wrapping off and noticed lots of little greenish white spots on the cigar that wipped off with my finger. I suspect this is mold. There is not mold on any other cigars or in my humidor. Could this be because of the cedar wrapper?

It could be that there was a bit of moisture on the surface of the cigar when it was wrapped. If there is not a current moisture condition, the mold would have become inert - mold cannot grow without moisture. Cedar is a naturally mold resistent material.

I assume that after you wiped the dry green-white powder off the cigar - that you smoked it - and that it was great. yes?

Yep I did smoke it but I was not impressed.

I have seen this on some of the cedar wrapped AF cigars. My guess is that they were stored at the distributor at a high RH and that the wood picked this up.

I have actually started removing the cedar wraps from cigars that come wrapped in these. After removing the cedar wraps from two fuente anejos and finding mold, I decided I would like to be able to see my sticks in the future. If you place a stick too close to the humidifier (using activator solution), the cigar can get damp and grow mold underneath the cedar. The rest of the cigar looks fine, so you can't tell until you remove the wrap. I just remove the wrap and place them back into the cello.

let me say this was a small ring gauge probably a 42. I noticed that when I started smoking it, it felt mushy in my mouth. Almost like I was smoking a sponge. It felt soft and mushy when I squeezed it.

My humidor digital hygrometer reads between 69 and 72 most of the time and the temp is around 68.

No other cigars in my humidor have this problem.

I'm not either, but I have a feeling I'm getting ready to be "blessed" with a reserve real in the near future. If the mold isn't that bad on the cigar, smoke it up. I've not heard anything that says smoking a slightly moldy stick will make you sick. If its covered with mold on the other hand, I think I'd pitch it.

Interesting. Breathing mold can make you sick but smoking a moldy cigar is probably ok. Maybe it is a matter of just how much mold is on it like you said.

Re: Mold On Romeo And Juliet

It sounds like it was a Romeo y Julieta Cedro Deluxe - #2 - 5.5" x 44

The two that I have smoked were excellent tasting cigars. Very smooth with lots of flavor. Sounds like you got a seriously bad stick.

If you are referring to me, you're lucky, I am currently out of these tasty tasty sticks. I might have to make a stop by my local B&M to pick some up for you.

Reality is, we breath in mold everyday, it is all around us. If you wipe it off the wrapper you should be fine. If it has entered the foot, the cigar should be tossed. If the cigar is long and only half is covered in mold, I will sometimes cut that portion off. If it is really badly covered and isn't that great of a cigar, just toss it IMO.

No...unless you have a depressed immune system secondary to a "viral" infection, are on steroids, or are on chemo therapy. Like Monte said..we breath mold everyday. I'm surprized that no one has asked what the RH is in the humi?

A greyish or whiteish fluffy mold, I'm told is good, It tells you that your cigars are aging properly. I would take all the wrappers of my cigars before I put them in my humidor.
